Eddie,
Yep I had to read the fine print plus add cause or two before I purchase insurance.
The tractor total cover on my land and others, but had to add more coverage in case I damage another land, fixture, person or persons,I do hope your insurance policy has somewhat the same coverage. Indeed its wise to have insurance soon as the wheels touch the main road today.

Something I read about, followed up on, and invoked about 10 years ago. Rather than buying additional liability coverage for my home and auto, I purchased an Umbrella Policy. It picks up where any of my existing policies leave off with respect to liability coverage: car, tractor, and property. For far less than the premiums I paying at the time for additional auto liability, I upped my liability to $1M across the board. Since it is secondary coverage (kicks in where the base policy leaves off), the lower risk-of-payout is reflected in the cost.

Grant, I used Oklahoma Farm Bureau. I don't think it sells insurance out of state but you probably have a similar company in your state that serves rural areas.

Peter, Sure am glad you asked this question, as I am facing a similar situation. Homeowners covers on own property but I'm concerned about that rare time at the neighbors or "Just down the road"

you did not ask for my input of the insurance company for insurance on a tractor and since I too live in the KC area, I would give it to you anyway. The insurance that I have for my tractor is through my auto insurance agent, it is American Family Insurance. The policy is written as an auto policy. Hopes this helps

Pete, this is a really good thread. I don't ever think about my insurance, but your question and all the responses has me ready to call my agent with questions tomorrow morning.

Thanks.

Thanks for starting this thread. I ended up with additional coverage for the tractor and implements (about $22/mo.) and off-premises liabilty at about $11/month. Nice not to be limited as to where I want to use my machine.

The way my agent explained it to me, that most homeowners policies would automatically cover most compact tractors...i.e. the kind that a typical homeowner might have...it was only after you started getting into the bigger than typical tractors that it would not be covered...my tractor (a JD5410) is defitenly bigger than a typical "lawnmower/tractor" and would not be covered w/out a special policy...my Yanmar 276 (27HP) would be covered...I got a $25000 policy on my JD for about $250/year.

If you can justify it you guys should really look into getting farm insurance. On all of the equipment, which is itemized at $78,000, that I have and for liablility I only pay $167 a year.

Richard,

By the looks of the replies, your answer may be exactly what some of us should look into.

Thanks for supplying the itemized value and the yearly cost. Now to figure out if my situation can be regarded as a farm.

Peter
