Yes but the irony of the whole thing is that the reason the research ship was there was to gather data to compare it with Mawsons data from an expedition very early last century. They were hoping that comparison of the data would support their theories that there was a lessening of the ice mass in the Antarctic and there is global warming.

Oh the ironing.

93,000 HP. Wow, what I wouldn't give for that in one of my tractors.

I couldn't afford the fuel bill:

With tanks having a capacity of 1.4 million gallons of fuel, the vessel’s operating range is 28,275 nautical
miles (32,538 miles).
http://www.uscg.mil/history/cutters...ocs/PolarSea1976-HistContextRpt22July2011.pdf

Roughly speaking, that seems to add up to about 20 gallons per mile (assuming "range" means 32,538 miles there and the same back)...and at $4.00 per gallon of diesel, over $5,000,000 to filler her up. Who's paying for all of this? Al Gore?

A Western European led research vessel, a Chinese ice-breaker, a Russian ice-breaker, and and American ice-breaker, walk into a bar. Which one talks to the pretty girl at the bar?

The American vessel, of course; it's the only one good at breaking the ice.

Actually, this has been a thought out process honed by decades of events in the maritime industry.

Under the Treaty of the Safety of Life at Sea, vessels are required to respond to a distress message. The costs incurred for the related response a matter for the ship owners after the event transpires.

As much as this is going to cost, we can square away our balance of trade with the Chinese?
