Used them for the first time in September of 2016 while in Charleston for the step-son's wedding. We (the parents of both the bride and the groom) were out to dinner with the kids. The rest of the wedding party was coming into town and the kids were going to meet them. We said something about getting back to the hotel and the bride said "Don't worry - we've got an Uber coming." HUH??? LOL! Been hooked on them ever since!!
I was doing some work in NYC last year about this time. Cost of Uber or Lyft from LaGuardia into Manhattan was only about $25 - so MUCH cheaper than a cab. Was at a conference in Orlando last September and took an Uber from the airport to the hotel. Was about $15. The "blue airport shuttle service" was going to be $35 and I would have been in a queue to the get to the hotel. Uber got me there with no other stops.
Used Uber in Atlanta last year - the driver was actually a middle school principal! His wife worked later hours than him, so when he got off work mid-afternoon, he'd drive for a couple of hours and make some extra money. Gotta love it!
If I remember correctly, the main difference between Uber and Lyft is that Lyft would give you a fixed price on the ride. Uber gives you an very close estimate, so if there's more traffic than their routing app anticipated, your actual cost for the ride could be a couple bucks higher than you were originally quoted. As far as I know, Lyft doesn't do that.
Politics aside, you can't beat the service(s)!!
