UDT or Gear Oil

( I've never seen anything spelling out why you should go with the Super over the regular UDT )

Nor have I. The manual with my 1995 Kubota simply said UDT (Super hadn't been invented yet I guess) OR and named several (7 I think) other brands by name. Then the manual with my 1999 Kubota simply said UDT or Super UDT. I checked with the dealer I bought the tractors from, as well as another Kubota dealer, and neither of them even stocked any Super UDT at all; said they'd order it if that's what I wanted. And in fact, the other Kubota dealer said they never even use UDT; said they used another brand because it was cheaper and just as good. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'm only guessing, but like some others on the forum, I suspect the Super UDT may be at least partially synthetic and may be better in extreme cold. Of course it may be better other times, too, but I don't know whether it is or not.

My L3400 service manual says that I should use either 80/90w gear oil or UDT in the front axle. The tractor came with super UDT in the entire tractor. I talked to my dealer about the difference in UDT and Super UDT. He said that Super is for extreme temperatures and that all Kubotas come with Super but that I need only UDT since I live in the south where extreme temperatures are not a problem. I don't understand why 80/90w gear oil or UDT can be used, since they are very much different in viscosity, but I did not ask about that. Since mine has UDT in it now, I will probably use UDT when I change it.

This topic came up several years ago and I still remember it well. The poster took some initiative and spoke to a Kubota service tech and asked him what to put in the front. The reply was something like, "Put yak urine in there for all I care, just don't run it dry!".

Mine has Amsoil in it and has since about 2000.

For what it's worth, the REAR axle is using the same fluid that flow thru your transmission and into your loader. You don't worry about using UDT or S-UDT and not 80w-90, do you? I don't!

Jibber, a tech rep from Amalie Oil told me that the Super Tractor Fluids can be used in everything, including the engine./forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'm not putting that stuff in my motor. No way. Shell Rotella goes there. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I must confess. I put two quarts of SUDT in my engine before realizing the error of my ways. This is only one of the times my head was where the sun don't shine. The other times are a secret for now. The motor oil I have comes in a gallon jug just like the SUDT and I was transfering the oil from the gallon into a quart container to have better access to the filler port on the engine. The gallon jugs are too large to get in there. I had two quarts in the engine before realizing what I was doing. I never ran the engine on SUDT, I drained and flushed with other motor oil before filling with the required engine oil. It hasn't seized so I guess I'm ok. It's not something recommended in the manual so don't take anyones word for it. I don't believe the SUDT has the appropriate properties for use in internal combustion engines. Use motor oil in engines. SUDT is a good gear lube, don't hesitate to use it in the front diff if it's all you have handy, it's just much higher priced than 80/90.
Best of luck,
Martin

Super UDT, per the spec, is able to be installed in some interval combustion engines. It is like people think UDT and Super UDT only differ by pour points etc.
