UDT/super UDT

I recently did a service on my 3710 and the wife happened to see the parts bill. She asked what that expensive "super UDT" stuff was. I quickly told her it was the trans/hydraulic fluid, but then she asked what the letters "U", "D", and "T" stood for and I was stumped. Anybody know?

UDT = Universal Transdraulic Fluid... although I don't know how they get UDT out of that.

Tractor Supply calls it Universal Hydraulic Fluid at $4/gallon. It comes in two types. The fluid approved for wet hydraulic brakes is required for most tractors. Beware of fluids that do not state this. They are cheaper, but will not operate properly if you have a hydraulic clutch or brakes that operate in the fluid. Tractor supply also sells a 5 gallon pail pump for $25 that is easier to use than a funnel.

Kubota calls their universal hydraulic fluid UDT and Super UDT. Personally, I would buy Amsoil AT-4 instead of Super UDT as the costs are pretty comparable. I have Super UDT in my tractor now, but it took a little less than 17 1/2 gallons at $12/gallon.

Probably because UTD is a lot harder to say. But easiest of all may be UTF, but they chose not to use that, either. Maybe it's a Japanese translation thing. Personally, the main reason I use Amsoil is because ATH is easy to say. I guess I'll have to go look up the acronym, now, though. I think it stands for All-purpose Tractor Hydraulic oil, but I don't remember for sure.
