The UFO cylinder "leaks" down when I have the lift arms up and an implement attached. Any ideas on why and how to fix? Thanks.

VW,

You need to update your information -- in your profile you state that you have no tractor, but in some of your posts you mention that you bought a YM 2002.

Some more info would be helpful. I am not absolutely positive what you mean by UFO, but if that is referring to the 3 point lift then on Yanmars, I believe, there are 2 valves under the seat that control how the 3 point behaves. One controls how fast it drops when placed in the down position and the other closes off the circuit so that the arms will stay up like for transport or when using the FEL or other such reason.

You can use these valves to trouble shoot exactly what the problem is. If the second valve is closed then the problem is in the lift cylinder itself and can only be rectified by rebuilding the lift cylinder with new seals. If with the second valve closed it does not leak down then the problem is in the valve body and that may be a seal problem or it may be a wear problem.

Now it could be that I do not know what I am talking about with your model. If I am talking about the right thing then good if not then just ignore this post and go about your business.

I have to agree with Mike...

You might also check, when your draft control lever is in neutral, that the attached linkage is not making contact with the small detente ball on the valve.

The UFO is usually electric/mechanical control and linkages that operate an attached implement (most often a rototiller).

Mike & Mark,
Thanks for the heads up on profile, I have updated it now. You are correct, mark, the UFO I am referring to is the lift cylinder as part of the 3pt lift system. I will check the valves under the seat and report back.

Beetle,

If your cylinder has gone bad, we have 2 or 3 used ufo cylinders on the shelf.

I would check the hoses for pin holes & tighten your fittings on the cylinder.

Also change the hyd. fluid & clean your screen filter (if needed)

For those that do not know what the UFO is, it is a control system to help automate the adjmt of the 3 pt lift and specifically to raise, lower and adj the tilt of the 3 pt. It's purpose is to control the depth of the tiller used in the rice paddies. The newer systems can be adj and then used during at the end of a row to raise and lower the tiller. Press a buttom and the tiller raises and push another button and it lowers to the preset position. Ernie could tell you more than I know about the later designs and all the things they can be used for.

This thread has to do with the hyd cyl on the right lift arm which controls the tilt. This cyl replaces the normal manual operated right arm normally found on most tractors. The tilt can be adj't from the drivers seat via the controls mounted on the right fender.

Taking a look this AM, I don't see where this cyl can be rebuilt which it too bad. If that is the case, you need to find a used one like Ernie has mentioned. Ernie, you holding one for me? :D

OK now I am informed. And understand better what is happening. Glad someone who knows what they are talking about came into the picture.

VWBeetle, mine leaks down also, but I replaced the electric controls with a hydraulic controller several years ago. It is a nuisance when I bush hog, but mostly i just periodically readjust. i was thinking of buying a replacement cylinder from Northern or some other supplier. One of these days maybe, when it becomes a big enough pain in the ...

I have one with your name on it,
But what makes you think that yours will fail, none of mine ever have,
and I use them all the time.

Don't have any expectations of failures but one never knows.

Nice knowing there are a few dealers out there that have knowledge and parts for some of these newer models, F series.

It is a pleasure to be able to adj the 3pt tilt on the fly with a simple movement of a lever close by. Think I'm getting spoiled.

Little disapointed to see the pics I posted have been cropped a little as what I posted showed more of the cyl being discussed. Along with the cyl there is a switch assy that tells the control when the link has the 3pt level.
