Greetings to all confused or interested Yanmar tiller owners. I have a UFO 2 tiller and I have been trying to see if I have automatic depth control on my tiller as do other UFO owners. As near as I can tell, I do not. My tiller has a handle at the rear that has two notches in it. It either raises or lowers the tiller when the handle is manually move. I have attached a few pics of my tiller hoping that other UFO owners will be able to tell me if I have the same setup as they. thanks, brett w

Brett,
Your tiller does have automatic depth control. The handle with two notches I think is either the On/Off mechanism, a two position feature for the depth control. I can see in the photo that there is a cable attached to the forward end of the rod which is attached to (or runs through) the handle and two notches. The other end of the cable attaches to the lever system for the 3pt lift. When the dirt flap at the back of the tiller moves up, it pushes the rod forward, which pulls the cable to actuate a lever on the 3pt lever system. This motion should lift the tiller. And there you have it - automatic depth control. You should have two 3pt levers. The outboard lever is to raise and lower the tiller, the inboard lever is to set the tiller depth for automatic depth control.

If you have the cable hooked up at the tractor end, try this out. With the tractor running, tranny in neurtal, the pto off, and the brakes locked, put the inner lever at about the mid point. Then go back behind the tiller and lift the dirt flap. The tiller should lift up. If it doesn't, then move the handle to the other notch position and try again. You should be able to see the cable move the linkage up by the control levers. You may have to play with the switches etc. on the fender also.

Is that as clear as mud or what!!??

Greg, thanks,
I just sent you an email but had an additonal thought. The two nothces on the handle (on the flap) may be to lock the tiller up or down and perhaps provide quick access if it gets hung up or tangled. If so , then the proper setting for auto depth would be to let the handle hover in between the two notches. I 'll try that as well. I suppose I would have the 3 pt just dropped down fully and let the auto do the rest. I just need a garden to work on and your dad to move my tractor one more time!

thanks, Brett W

This is also two wheel depth guides that are missing from your tiller. The two vertical pipes at the back should have a wheel and adjustable depth guide on them.

gws,
I know almost all of the Yanmar tillers on the gray market tractors have the depth gauge wheels. However, the ones with automatic depth control don't have them as normal equipment. There is a location on which to mount them, but they are not necessary. I have operated a YM1702D with the UFO tiller - it has automatic depth and level control.

Greg, Do you know what the two electric knobs on the fender with the joy stick is for? One knob has two detents and the other knob has three detents on it. I have figured out what the joystick does just dont know what the two knob's are for??? I also have two lever's next to the seat.. Thanks Dan

Dan,
I only operated the tractor and tiller for a few minutes. I don't remember much more except that I thought that one of the knobs disabled the tilt (self leveling).

dan, if you and I play around with the tillers and take good notes, we can compare and perhaps together, figure out what all those buttons/knobs do, bw

Well Brett, I guess we are going to have to do that... It sounds like you have the same set up as I have on my 2202D.. I take it you have the joy stick and the two knobs on the fender control box? I am kinda supprised not too many people have this set up... Or there just not responding... I have three manual's and in all three it says nothing about this or does not have the wireing diagram... Thanks Dan

Dan, Yep I have the knobs and buttons you can turn left or right, or push up, middle or backwards. We'll figure it out I suppose. I did some tilling with it last summer and I used the UFO to keep the tiller flat while I was on a slight incline. Worked great and that flat area is where I now house my tractor and tiller, bw
