Case 580D Backhoe, NH TC40D SS, JD 450BC dozer, Ford F700 dump
Well I was all set to go ahead and order my TC40D today, but at the last minute thought I would give the local Deere dealer a shot at my business

Deere:
4610 e-hydro, 460 Loader w/4n1 bucket / 48 backhoe
rear remote, block heater, girll guard, QT bucket, arm-rests
LIST: $38,726 SALE: $30,118

New Holland:
TC40D similarly configured with 16LA/ 758C backhoe
PRICE: $30,847

Deere pluses:
Planetary drive
More power

NH Pluses:
Loader arms / visibility / joystick

I was pretty suprised that there would be such a price difference. I just assumed that the Deere would be more expensive. Now I don't know what to do as my blood had turned blue. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Have you used both models? If you haven't maybe you will find you are more comfortable on one over the other. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Who's the better dealer?
Which is closer?
Who provides better service?

Also you may want to consider which will have the highest resale value.

You have got two great machines there. Have you compared them on the JD web site yet. It is a good comparison tool sometimes when they compare the right tractors. You are in a good position to make the best deal.

Don't forget to figure the real total cost after finacing if you will be using their financing. JD adjusted their rates for me one time when dealing on my skid steer to compete with the other guys.

Ultimately get the one that has the most features for the money and drives the best. Don't forget to give the same chance to Kubota. Kubota came up with by far the best deal for me and the smoothest running engine.

Good luck Sounds like fun.

Tell your NH dealer just exactly what you told us in your post and give him a chance to respond. He may sharpen his pencil and give you a second surprise. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Ken brings up a good point. I would love to be able to take a couple of model years and then plot the depreciation curve and see how they look. I have the "Official Used Tractor Guide 2003" but they do not have prices broken by tractor year, just model so that is not possible. Any thoughts on who would hold their value better? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A couple months ago I bought a TC40 (about $1.5k less than the D model) with most D features (except the hst - actually, I would have paid more for a tractor without the hst).

1) TC40, 16LA, quick detach HD front bucket, welded hooks, complete instrumentation (oil pressure guage, volt meter etc), 758C BH w-18" bucket & 36" cemetery bucket, deluxe 3pt, set of remotes, tool box/rear worklight/right step, folding ROPS and other stuff don't remmeber off hand. Price?? $27,400. I could have bought the "D" version for a hair under $29k.

2) Buy the tractor you really like. A $1k price difference spread over 10 years is $100 per year for pete's sake. Not worth even thinking about (unless things are really, really tight in which case maybe you shouldn't buy a tractor at all - just kidding on that one).

3) The NH is a clearly heavier duty machine (go whack on the plastic sheet metal on both models, look at the frame/housings, etc.). Both tractors should do a good job for a long time though.

Good luck - and, seriously, don't worry about a few bucks difference. Over the life of the tractor you're talking peanuts. JD is often a bit cheaper because of ... (oops, better not say).

You posted right before I did. Yes, I have run depreciation runs (have a chart on the 2120 series - similar to the TC45 and some JD models) going back 15 years but don't have time to attach here. Bottom line, the NH is slightly, very slightly better than the JD which surprised me. But the different was so small as to be, as I said, peanuts. Any MAJOR brand will hold up ok. Condition will count the most. A clean NH will always be worth more than a beat up JD - and a clean JD will always be worth more than a beat up NH. Between the two makes, don't worry about the depreciation. Now, if you were going further down on the tractor food chain depreciation would come more into play.

You might want to think what company is still in busines in 10 years.Parts availability etc.I really like the blue stuff, but that weighed heavily on my mind.
