There's no problem with shear bolts, Deere (or whoever builds this for them) just needs to actually design the equipment to use them. I've looked for a universal with a slip clutch or shear bolt but have not had luck yet. The shaft for the front blower is quite small as it has less torque than an equivalent rear pto shaft due to the much higher rpm.

i wonder if the shaft from the tractor to blower can be made to break like the pto shaft on my 3pt meteor...right where it couples to the tractor, the coupler is 2 pieces with an extra tab of steel where a bolt goes thru it (almost like the auger shear pin on the 59 front mount). this is the one that breaks the most often on the meteor and is easy to fix.

i'll have to get/find a picture of it in case anyone doesn't know what i mean.

I've looked for something like the pic I've attached, a pto yoke that includes a shear bolt. Would be easy to add to the PTO shaft but all the ones I've found so far are designed for the rear pto with the slower speed and larger shaft diameters.

This is apparently what happens when a shear bolt doesn't shear. You can see the hub is split, and you can also see the key that has rotated out of the keyway and jammed the hub on the shaft. The hub will NOT come off. I would cut it off with a torch, but I'm out of acetylene.:(

I think I will try drilling next to the key to weaken the hub and relieve the pressure. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll buy a new tank of acetylene.

At least we are under a lake effect snow advisory today. :D I'd better put the loader back on the tractor.

Hello Tom,

For what its worth you can solve the rock problem this way-

Using angle iron for the sides you can use concrete reinforcing mesh mounted to 2 pieces of strap steel along the bottom edge that would have through bolts to hold the mesh and another pair of strap steel pieces to make a screen to allow the snow to to pass and keep the rocks out.

All you need is the mesh to be cut 4-6 inches wide making the mesh frame 4-6 inches high at the base and bolt it in place to prevent the rocks from entering.

that's what i was referring to (just couldn't find a picture!). i suppose one made for 540 rpm may not shear the same as one made for 2000 rpm.

while looking at the pto shaft/coupler for the blower, it looks very much like my cat 0 pto stuff. the coupler is almost identical, tho i couldn't get them to actually connect to each other. wonder if there is such a thing for cat 0?

I was wondering about balance, something that works at 540 may cause a fair bit of vibration at 2000 rpm. Weasler apparently has one that's designed for up to 2000 rpm but it still is sized for the 540 shaft/spline.

i guess that's a problem unless they make one for the non-splined end, which oculd be adapted much easier...wonder if there is a 1 3/8" 6 spline to whatever spline the JD uses adapter (never actually counted the splines!).

Hey Leon, that sounds like a good idea, though I think the rock that broke my blower could have got through the mesh. Isn't that stuff usually 6 x 6?

xkbal,
The yoke that came with my Befco tiller is just like that for just that reason. Save the gear box at the expense of the shear bolt. I'll post a part # for it tomorrow.

I was going to write that the yoke on my tiller looks just like your photo too. It is from Tsc. Jy

is the tiller 540 rpm? i think that they can be readily found for 540 rpm, but will they be balanced at the 2000 rpm we need for the front blower?
