Bob,
I blew it. I read your bio and you are from Indiana. They do not allow switchblades.

( Indiana - 35-47-5-2. Knife with automatically opening blade
prohibited. -- It is a class B misdemeanor for a person to
manufacture, possess, display, offer, sell, lend, give
away, or purchase any knife with a blade that opens
automatically by hand pressure applied to a button,
spring, or other device in the handle of the knife. )

My point in all this is that the Brits are not that different from us.

Kinda like a switchblade that uses gravity or centripital force instead of a spring to flip the blade into an open and locked position.

Wow, I have to remember to commit that one to memory, thanks Mike. I love learning new words or at least words I haven't used.

Nah, nor would they ban guns either. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Banning them sure helped their crime rate; especially violent crime involving firearms. Surely they wouldn't follow suit with knives. If they did, I feel certain that it would definitely have a more significant impact on violent crime than their firearm ban. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

This thread was really tongue in cheek. However, the ban of "dangerous" items themselves has rarely worked in world history. Holding people responsible for their actions would be a novel idea. There are more deaths by far from automobiles than from firearms, knives, baseball bats, and golf clubs combined. It would make more sense to ban them. Tractors should logically follow. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

By the way, it is still a law on the books in Indiana making it a crime to spit on the sidewalk. Perhaps they should enforce that one. Since I have 4 kids that play soccer, I'd like to see a law against people walking their dogs to poo on the soccer fields! That's nasty!

There is a law on dog poo in Indiana. There are also laws against spitting on the sidewalk. However, you are allowed to spit in the street, and that is where we walk mostly, anyways, because there is dog poo on the sidewalk because that law is rarely enforced! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Phil, I'm not really trying to argue with you, I honestly thought you didn't read to the bottom of the article and missed that sentance that stated they already outlawed a bunch of knives.

I also didn't compare their knife laws to Indiana's switchblade law, I'm not really sure why I'd even want to compare a typical kitchen knife to a switchblade.

I would have to agree with PBinWA about the whole watermelon issue! However, a quick look tonight while doing some cooking yielded several fine pieces of forged steel in plain sight in my kitchen that would be outlawed. In the knife block on the counter were long pointy knives from Henkles, Sabatier and the drawer had some great Chicago Cultlery pieces. Funny, but I never even felt threatened by any of them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't forget the infamous Elaina Bobbit and what she did with a kitchen knife..... I just read in the news this past week that her sister tried the same thing, but missed the target. It further said that she was being charged with a __________ Sorry, but the rest of the story can't be typed on this site... PM for the rest of the story if you really want to know... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I didn't think she was from Indiana.

Moss, Dargo, etc . . . other inane laws on the books include forbidding taking cows for rides in baskets under hot air balloons. And yes, there is a story behind that law . . .

I personally like the Indiana law (still on the books) that require you to stop, turn off the engine, and cover the front of your car if you meet a horse on the street. This law is designed to prevent the horse from being spooked by the "new fangled and loud automobile". /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Being that I had to stop and get out of my '62 Chevy to clean where a bird got me at a park yesterday, I can only imagine what a cow dangling from a hot air balloon would do! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

And, that Bobbit thing; that causes a certain uncomfortable feeling within me, if you know what I mean. I could have gone all day without that thought! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
