As fall is once again upon us , I'm awaiting the annual migration of vermin into my garage & barn. last year it was de-con and mouse traps, as well as the larger bait packs of rat poison for the barn. I always have mice moving into my old cars in the garage, even though I have a fairly tight building. and usually get a mouse nest or two under the tractor hood or in the corner of the garage. Has anyone had good luck with the plug in devices that claim to chase these critters away?? If so, what brand worked for you the best, and how many does it take to keep 'em out ?? How do you know they're even working ?? ............Tom

I have bought the cheaper kind and more expensive kind for rats in my house. Neither worked and are a waste of money. The cheaper ones were put in almost every room. They only make an irritating clicking noise and only drive mne crazy and not the rats. The other would supposedly use the house wiring and send an irritating noise or vibration through the walls where they live. This also did not work. I don't use poison because I have several pets which I would live with rats other than hurt one of my loved ones. I used live traps and kept the petfood where they couldn't get to it. I killed about 30 rats last winter and hope this next winter does not get that bad. I read somewhere that 2 rats can have 5000 descendants in a year. I haven't caught any in about 8 months, hopefully I have a handle on this now.
I have about $80.00 in these devices if you want them I will mail them to ya half price. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Just kiddin' I say they don't work, others may say they do. Only way I think they would get rid of pests is if you could hit the rat with one.

Ditto on Rebel. We've had the kind for rodents and for insects (yeah, I know....fool me twice, shame on me) and I would give both the same effectiveness rating....Zero. Traps, a good ratter (as in most terriers, many crossbred mutts, etc.) and yes, occasionally poison are what have worked for us. We do use glue traps in some places where other traps don't seem to work and we don't want poison. One must then dispatch the catch.

I'll be a 3rd to say they don't work. My M-I-L gets taken for all of the stupid mail order junk. I didn't believe it, but she isn't that get some for us, because we had a field mouse problem - yeah, because we build in what used to be a corn field - duh. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif She bought us 3 or 4 different ones. Guess where I usually caught the mouse? Right next to the thing. So I have to say it wasn't working.

Traps with peanut butter or the sticky pieces of cardboard ones is what has worked best for us. The hard plastic sticky things didn't catch anything other then dirt/lint and my fingers as I was putting them out.

I've had several of those things, some pretty exensive units and some of the $19 cheap-o units. From what I can tell, none has actually worked on mice in my garage, pool house, etc. Sometime this summer I read an article that said they don't work. The article simply confirmed my experience. Then again, maybe I had the wrong units? But I'm not bothering to invest any more in any of them at any price.

Don't know what is going on with the people that have had no luck.
I have had great luck with them for rodent repelling. No niose and no mice. Upon my recommendations 2 friends houses are now rodent free too. I got mine and for my friends at Sams Club , 2 different brands and both work. Placement is important, you can't put them behind something and expect them to work, the ultrasonic sound has to be able to radiate out forward. The ones I bought came 4 and 5 to a pack for under $20.
They do only seem to work for rodents, not noticed a decrease in spiders or other bugs. Also one type at sams also claims to repel mosquitoes, WRONG, maybe the mosquitoes are deaf. Also the mosquitoes ones DO make an anoying noise. Just buy the plain cheap ones and they work great.
No mice in my workshop either and I used to see them all the time in there. Had one (mouse) build a nest in my tractor, put 1 repeller in the tractor shed pointed at the tractor no more nests, been about 1 yr too.

They work for myself and friends, not sure what is going on with everyone else.

Just wish I had discovered them sooner.

Tom; They don't work for me either. What seems to work is a cat or two. I won't say how many my wife and I have, but I will say we have no mice or rats. We rescue critters, so if you need a cat, let me know. I think people abandon them because they don't like things with four legs that are smarter than them /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

John........Although my wife & I both like cats, we both have allergies to them. I do the trap/ peanut butter routine every fall, and still get my share of mice back again. I'm not a big fan of the poison route, but in the barns, there's just too many entry points to make traps effective. I could use a a cat at my other property, but as i'm not there all the time, it may get hungry between visits/feedings. I guess I was just looking for an easier method ( the plug ins).........Tom

Tom; Glad I don't have allergies like that, I'd probably be divorced by now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On one midnite drear, it seems I remember, [or imagined], that mothballs are not favored by mice. I wonder if your county extension might be of some help?

Poison definetly isn't for myself either. You usually wind up killing much more than the targeted critter. Everytime I hear poison, I think of DDT. We all know what kinds of problems that caused. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I've tryed numerous ones and I swear the mice just get more and more. Last year in my shop they were so bad. We have alot of cats down at the house and I really didn't want to use poison. I used a couple different ones thinking they had to work as they keep coming out with different ones. I am not kidding that when I put those in it got worse. I had some CRP seed that was in a 50 lb. sack in the corner. It was gone in about a week. My walls are lined and you could see where they had put the seed in the walls. As soon as you'd clean it up there was another pile there in 10 minutes. I did put ALOT of poison out and got rid of them but man did the shop smell bad for a long time. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
