Ultra-sonic Pest repellant devices

I know that they don't work and had a bet with a customer at the pet shop that said that they did work. We took the unit that she said worked so well and put it into a cage filled with mice and left it there plugged in for 4 days. Not one mouse ever jumped away from that device nor did they seem at all discomforted by it. They eat, slept, reproduced, and did every thing that they did before the device was put into the cage. The mice here in CT are so smart that even mouse traps sometimes don't work....

Hmm, I wonder why they work for me and my friends. Bought my uncles place a couple of years ago. Had been empty for several years. After one year the mice were still bad with trapping and all that stuff. Mice droppings, holes in bread sacks, etc... put 5 repellers around in house and have seen NO mice or evidence since. Not sure what is going on here... maybe you guys have deaf mice ? 2 friends have ahd similiar resluts as I. Maybe only the cheapo ones from Sams work ?

Slowrev...........maybe the cheap units are built from radioactive components from an old nuke plant ??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

"maybe the cheap units are built from radioactive components from an old nuke plant "

hmm, maybe the led is not an led ? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Maybe I just thought it was because was glowing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But seriously, I am perplexed by all the negative comments since I have seen very good results. I was sceptical before I tried them, but fully convinced after trying them.

I do know someone who got some First Alert brand repellers that were junk. Me /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif threw them away and got some more elcheapos from sams and the mice left my shed...maybe I should go back and get another pack or two while they have ones that work.

The First Alert ones also claimed to repel mosquitoes...WRONG!

"man did the shop smell bad for a long time"

That's the reason I stopped using poisen bait.. "dead mouse smell".. they die in the walls, floors, ceilings.. the smell will amost make you want to puke. We have 4 cats now that patrol the house, barn and surrounding areas.. besides the mice and moles.. I've seen them eat spiders too.. w/in the last couple weeks they started catching frogs.

I use poison, and find that they only die in the walls if that is where they are already living. (I've not heard good reports of ultrasonic devices either).

I put out poison regularly, but don't keep it out all the time. I put it out around the sheds and the house in the fall when the mice are looking for shelter, but their home is away from the building. That way, they find the poison, and take it back 'home' with them, eat it and die there.
In 35 years, I have never had a mouse in the house, honest. I did have the 'died in the wall' problem one year when putting on new siding, and there was a mouse nest started in the insulation, getting in from the outside. When I sided it up, and put out the poison, they died and smelled. (I'd gladly take that smell once in awhile over the smell of cats. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ). Sorry, cat lovers. Not for me; beenthere, donethat.

Once in a while, I have found a mouse in the garage. Last one was (I think) when a friend left their car in the garage while travelling, and there may have been a mouse in the engine compartment. One showed up anyway, and was caught in the sticky trap that I have set out for moths, bees, flies, spiders, etc. Works great for them, as well as the dreaded asian lady beetle (starting to show up now - grrr).

The first batch of elcheapos were Weitech. Not sure on the second batch, looked different but got them for a friend and don't have any around to check right now.

I think placement of the repellers might be a key item. You can't put them behind a chest or a bed and expect them to work. The ultrasound needs to radiate out into the room. They will not penetrate walls and such, but have heard/seen no evidence of mice in walls or attic. I was just up there last week doing some insulation work.

One thought, maybe carpet decreases their effectiveness. All of us who they have worked well for have hardwood floors and vinyl. Of course my tractor shed has gravel /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and my shop has concrete.

btw I aquired 3 cats about 3 months ago and only one mouse has been caught, maybe from the barn next door or the field ? The cats live in my tractor shed and my workshop. They bring everything to me to show off, several rabbits, 1 squirrell, birds, etc, but only one mouse.
