Muhammad, how about a craigslist style voting system? ie if enough logged in users vote something as spam then its put in a holding cell till a mod sees it or some such?

Some way of harnessing the group, basically.

I don't think that would work well for several reasons. The most obvious to me is that the moderators usually deal with spam/porno/advertising before more than one or two members report a post. Honest. It is rare that we get notified by more than 4 before one of the mods deals with it.

Second reason is there are a few members that seem to rankle the masses with almost every post they make. I could easily see the pitchforks and torches coming out often! :D (and no comments about who, O.K.);)

Moss Road, you all seem to take care of things as soon as you know about it. Good job.

Well, thanks, but the other mods beat me most of the time. I'm not kidding, either. Those guys are FAST!

:)

A thanks to the mods. I know its a thankless job sometimes. Usually the spam doesnt last too long before someone gets it.

Muhammad: Glad to see your not being complacent regarding spam. Its a never ending battle. They're crafty buggers :)

I was just throwing out the first post mod idea, because ive seen it done on a site and it seems to work. Yes it slows down the first time poster a bit, but it really kills the spammers.

TBN is excellent at keeping SPAM at bay and the credit goes to the Moderators and Management... Thank You!

Sometimes the 'triangle icon' works... And,.... ~Sometimes it don't.~

The 'triangle icon' always works, and quickly, for spam, ****, etc.

The other things people use the 'triangle icon' for are usually 'the pot calling the kettle black' situations which require parental skills usually reserved for feuding two year olds. :D

In all honesty, I did not know about the red triangle, until the other day, and have not even noticed it. Where in the FAQ's does it explain about the red triangle? I still don't know what to do even now. What do you do when you think something is spam, click on the red triangle, and then what.

After you click on the triangle, you will see an area to enter a message indicating the reason you are reporting the post. Click on Send Report and you're done.

If you run your cursor over the little red triangle, you'll see if says "Report Post". If you click on it, you'll get a dialogue box in which you can type whatever message you want to send to the moderators. Just below that box you'll also see:

"Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts."

When you submit that, it'll send an e-mail to each of the moderators so they can review the post in question and make a determination as to what action, if any, should be taken.
