Jay,
The radio transmitter fence is looking better and better. Do you know the brand and where I could purchase one?

For what it's worth ...we got our Brittany and he would run away so I bought a shock collar off of ebay for about $35...I only had to shock him 3 or 4 times then I just had to hit vibrate when he started to run and did not obey the command...Come ! He got to know his boundaries ...it took about a month and then a week follow up a month later ...that has been 2 yrs . ago and he never runs away..he stays on the property and comes when called...We had looked at the invisible fence but tired this first...glad we did...Good Luck ;)

Good advice Bob...I did fail to mention that the dogs get a "beep" first (and then almost always back away), and then a "shock". They learn pretty quickly that they don't want the "shock".

Bob,
The money's certainly right. I'll talk to my son and see whether he thinks a shock collar would work in his situation.
Thank you,

I really think a remote-controlled beep/shock caller should be purchased as well. In our case, the dogs had these quite awhile before the "invisible fence", so they were pretty aware that a "beep" had some further/hated consequences.

I realize spending $100-150 for the remote collar, and then another $2-300 for a radio "invisible fence" is expensive. We always justified by thinking about how much our dogs mean to us.

Jay,
Has your unit ever had to be replaced? I'm not sure I want to go through 5 like bh3zfc has even if the manufacturer is easy to deal with.

We've had the unit for 4-5 years now, with now problems.

Actually, I lied. We had a MAJOR problem right off the bat, the "sending unit" would not "change" the parameter (you can set it). They sent a new unit, no questions asked, and it has worked flawlessly.

It's funny how you can forget the very negative, when it's handled positively.

Sounds good, Jay. It would seem, that a wired unit like the ones with underground cables would work the best but, in this case, the one that's easiest to set up seems to be more reliable.

You might consider another direction that has the added benefit of being a negative visual barrier.

Just go to a farm store and buy an electric fence charger. It doesn't have to be expensive to be effective. Then run two strands of yellow poly fence where you want the dogs contained. One at 12" the other at 24". Once they get snapped a time or two they won't go near it.

I've used it on my farm for over 30 years with at least a dozen dogs without a single mishap. It also keeps other dogs and most critters out.

If you take the dogs somewhere else to visit or run you can put up a single strand, not even charge it, and the dogs won't cross it.

The cost for the charger, fence wire, stand-offs, and posts (rebar or such) will run less than $100. Advantages beside the above: no collar necessary, virtually unlimited size (just string the wire), after a month it can be left off. The chance of a breakdown is very, very small.

It also works with pigs but they will try to test the wire every once in a while. Guess the zap is worth it to them. But if they find it is off you will be in for some pig chasing.
