That's correct. When running platic pipe underground, you have to use risers that can take the abuse and harsh envirnoment above ground. Imagine eager grounds maintenance with an agressive weed eater...also, underground lines are to be at least 24" deep, and must have a trace ribbon installed with the plastic so the line can be detected. If the plastic pipe isn't yellow, then the ribbon should be yellow.

My neighbors rent their underground tank as well. The underground tanks are designed for that purpose and therefore there is no increase in liability. Mine, I have two, are owned by myself but I contract to have the gas supplied regualrly. Another neighbor has a large above ground and he shops for the lowest price, he owns his tank. I have been offered both a purchase and a rental undeground tank but so far have not been terribly interested in it. My tanks are not terribly visible. One is behind the shop and another is well away from the road accessed by a gravel road I built with the BX. J

Obviously many people rent underground tanks. I have not had any luck with the 15 companies I have called in Ohio.
How much could I expect to save/gallon by shopping around for propane as I have not needed to do this.

We built a year ago. The propane dealers in our area will give you the underground tank and pipe it to the house if you agree to purchase your propane from them for five years. The price for the fuel is the going rate so it is a good arrangement.

The tank was buried by the excavator at the grading process. Our total cost of installation of the buried tank was the cost of the propane pumped into the tank. Sounds like you need a little more competition in your area.
