I recently bought a used sickle mower. It seems to have everything that I need to use it and it is in usable condition... Only problem is that it is missing the Universal Joint for connecting the driveline to the PTO. The driveline is a 6 spline so that I know already.

Here are my questions:

1) How do I know what size to get???
2) Should I look for more than just a basic version? I don't want to spend a lot but I need it to work well and last.
3) Are there online stores that I should avoid?

I really could use some help with this. I have never needed to replace a U-joint before.

There should be a 2 part telescoping shaft going from the mower to the tractor. Each end should have a U joint. You may be missing the whole end with included U joint that connects to the tractor. Do you have both parts of the shaft or only the section attached to the mower? This omission is a common problem when buying a used implement.

Thank you for the the help.

Here are a couple of pictures to help explain.

I have the u-joint at the mower and the drive shaft. It is the required joint at the tractor that is missing.

I measured the shaft end: 1" across, 1 1/4" across the splines. Which measurement do I use?

Agri-supply has multiple different types and I can't tell which are right. The Eurocardan type look right in the pictures, but there is no size that works.

Does this look right?

That mower attaches to your drawbar, right? In 1st pic, is that bearing carrying the spline shaft rigidly attached to the mower. When the mower is attached to the tractor how close is that spline to the PTO stub spline of the tractor?

It is a pull type MF Model 32.

The shaft is resting in a bearing that moves forward and back. It is just for supporting the spline shaft.
I haven't measured it, but eyeballing it I would say it is close enough for just a single U-joint. When I fully extend the spline shaft (in the bearing) it looks to be 6.5" from bearing to PTO stub and 8" to the locking groove in the PTO stub. Stub end to stub end would only be about 4". I'm pretty sure I don't need an additional shaft assembly.

I could measure it tomorrow evening if you would like to confirm it. I have a small Shaft assembly from my mini baler that I could try but it is going to be too long for sure.
