Don,

You can buy bobwhites pretty easily and for not very much money. Start raising them, and let them escape on there own.

My neighbor has 240 acres and working with the Fish & Game to do this with both quail and turkeys. The main thing they want is habitat improvement. Fireants are not as big a factor in there demise ans habitat destruction is. Farming and land clearing is the main reason there are so few quail left.

Bush piles, edge habitat and tall grass are all vital for them to survive.

With one, you either have a neighbor whos raising them and letting them go, or you have the early stages of a comeback.

I was at a guys place who put out grain for them everymorning. There was at least a hundred of them around his house. It was very COOL!!!!

Once my neighbor starts releasing birds, I'm gonna join him and start raising a few here too!!!

I have e-mailed the local Texas Parks and Wildlife Biologist. I'm going to see about the possibility of getting a covey established. Thanks.

A covey? Why would you want a group of witches on your place?

I would say Bobwhite Quail also. I saw the funniest thing here though a pheasant walked through the yard yesterday, I didn't think that we had any wild pheasants left in PA. Most are raised and stocked but no stocking areas around my house, the pheasant must have been lost.

A tidbit of information:

Does everyone know that pheasants aren't native to America? All of them decended from stocked birds that were originally from Asia.

Did you know that over a dozen species of pheasant have been released in this country, but the ringneck is the only one to make it in large populations?

I can remember walking through the tall grass and stirring up a covey of quail. The sound of their beating wings all at once can really startle you if you aren't expecting it.
Jinman,
Yeah, you ought to try that on horseback. Especially if the horse isn't really into this going for a ride nonsense today. It can be exciting!

Yes, I just went through that last week, but not with quail. There was a dead cow in the woods just off a trail I was riding on and as I approached about 20 black vultures took off. Vultures ARE noisy! I was able to stop my young horse after about 50 yards but he sure didn't want to go back that way again. (neither did I)

Don, It's kinda funny. When I was young we had quail at my place. Then, like everywhere else, they dissappeared. That was about 20 years ago.

2 years ago I had a covey under a cattle guard at my gate. I ain't seen 'em since.

I'm about to put my land under the wildlife exemption from the ag exemtion. That is if the T's are crossed and the stars align... When I do, I'm going to start releasing quail for restoration. I had a friend who was with Quail Unlimited and like Eddy, he stated that research showed that habitat destruction (native grasses to coastal) was the problem and not the fire ants. I honestly don't see how fire ants couldn't be worse than grass destruction. I have about 40 acres native grass, 50 wooded and 40 improved acres. I don't know if that is enough to make a stand, but I'll try.
