Look at the "Floating Excavater" .... now that I wish I could borrow to clear Beavers!

I would like to have seen the loading operation. That must have been really delicate when that thing finally broke over center.

Old beaver tail lowboys used to raise the tractors rear wheels off the ground. I suppose that is what caused the invention of the lowboy that splits in two, leaving the tongue on the fifth wheel of the tractor and providing a nice shallow loading angle.

We use to have a class in machinery opeation at the university...but when it came to loading and unloading, one of the farm kids (who obviously grew up on these things) hopped up and unloaded the back hoe off the truck using only the bucket and hoe. Needless to say the dean was NOT impressed and the class never resumed. I was so bummed!

We allways weld some foldable supports at the back of the trailer or truck bed. It saves a tremendous amount of stress on the frame and makes the operation a whole lot safer. One 7 ton, 30' single axle trailer, sold to a manufacturer of mobile houses, cracked above the rear axle because it didnt have load support legs. The other trailer that cracked in the 20 years we build them, was a 5 ton trailer (3,5 ton net payload), loaded with an 8 ton wheel loader.
even the 70 ton, 7 axle semi lowbeds i've worked on for a month or so at a governmental contractor, had support legs at the back, even though its 7 axles were spread over the full length of the trailer.

You know when the JD dealer dropped off a 2305 tractor for the day I did not like his F150 lifting off the ground when he unloaded it! That was only a 1800 pound tractor with what was attached.

I purchased a car hauler trailer shortly after my tractor. I had a local welder weld stands that I manually drop down when unloading and loading tractors and cars. It works quite well. In fact, some weekend racers have followed suit with the same thing.

I have an aluminum landscape trailer which I don't want to have welded. Has anyone installed hand-crank type trailer jacks in the back? I was thinking about putting one on each side of the rear, so I can crank them down when loading/unloading and rotating them horizontal when towing. I'd have to drill and bolt them on, though. Thoughts?

Found the answer to my own question on a previous thread, now that I looked....:)

Can anyone post photos of what they did, and how?

This is a 12 ton trailer (2x 5,5 ton axles) with hydraulic foldable and width adjustable ramps we built. If you look close, you can see the fold away supports on the edge of the rear bump bar. We use standard machined and welded brackets, which are designed to hold the triangle on a slew ring steered trailer. we use these brackets for everything and anything, because they come with a pin with grease zerk and are cheap because we buy them in bulk.
The leg is folded up when not in use and suspended on a small chain with hook under the trailer.
With air suspension you can simply lower the suspension till the trailer rests on its feet. with leaf or rubber suspension you need either a landing gear, or foldable legs like these, not telescopic ones, as you might not get the pin out of the telescopic ones when the trailer is loaded, and sinks in its suspension.
