This is a tough one for me. My two year old son goes ballistic if I don't give him a ride on my lawn mower. I don't mow with him but I do give him an occasional ride to calm him down.....

He knows that hard work pays off. :) Kids are quick learners. ;) I can't think of any more strenous work than a temper tantrum. They take the wind right out of you.

I have to agree. Making the world child proof is allot harder than just making the child world safe, thru education and -constant- parenting.

Chris, you make allot of good sense with that statement.

My 10 year old son is very tractor savvy and on occasion, he rides with me when I'm putting along slowly on the road. Never when working. IMO, there are a million ways to get your kids killed if Murphy's law had it's way. I have to draw the line somewhere and try my best to approach these thing in a safety minded fashion. Obviously, for that reason it is best to keep children away from tractors and educate them. I am always sorry to hear about tractor fatalities, especially those involving children.

I worry when my grandkids come to visit me and then run up to the tractor, even when it is parked. They are NOT tractor savvy and I have to yell at them to keep away from the tractor. I tell them it is the most dangerous thing on the property....keep your distance! Then they look at it in awe and stay clear of it.

Yep.. case by case basis, and even still.. somewhere there is a line that has to be crossed.. just got to figure out what each childs threshold is.

I'm about to sound like a miserable SOB...

You don't need to hide your tractor. You need to train your son. If any of my kids went ballistic over being told they couldn't have what they want, they would get a solid smack. No, I don't abuse my kids. I take care of them and protect them from harm.

My kids are pretty much grown now. They are reasonably functional members of society. They also know how to operate equipment safely and fend for themselves. I believe I've done right by them.

Please teach your son that he doesn't get what he wants by terrorising his parents.

I appreciate and respect your advice but you're right, you do sound like a miserable SOB :) The smily face means I'm kidding.

I've been working with him for the past few weeks. He now tells my wife not to go near the tractors because they are too dangerous. I didn't even have to smack him to get him to understand.

Nice change of roles when the 2yo becomes the household safety freak.:D You might consider rewarding him with his own pedal tractor (with FEL of course). My 3yo daughter loves my tractor but she has a great time operating her own plastic "Cat" in the yard and uses the FEL to move dirt etc while we are gardening.

We have quite the collection of plastic diggers, dozers, trucks etc.. It helped..
