Unreliable internet

I asked earlier if it was DSL,, because we had a simple fix that made ours virtually 100% perfect.

It turned out there was a phone plugged in on the line, without the filter.
We added a filter,
the performance went from 1.5 Mb to constantly over 6Mb.

The guys they send out never check in the house,,, and surely do not walk your house, looking for another phone.
Make sure EVERY phone has a filter!!

How smooth and reliable is the electric power to your router/access point ? I have U-verse and it was dumping a lot until I started powering the AP from a car battery with a 12v battery maintainer. Now the hour counter is almost out of digit spaces. It was the occasional hiccups or blips that trashed it, not 1 or 2 minute disconnects. Not the same as a surge protector, just a giant smoothing filter.

Don't really know how smooth the power is. The internet goes out for more than a couple minutes at a time,

No land lines in the house. The tech guy has been in the house three times. He was out today while I was a work. The tech said he was stumped, said to reboot modem when it happens I wish I would have been home as I would have told him I would be contently resetting the modem.

He did tell the wife he would check into it and maybe check/change something back at the office.

When I still used the phone they put a splitter at my box outside to insure no interference with the line going to the modem. I think the splitter failed one time and they replaced it.

We finally got a new wireless company to connect to our tower that I built years ago for a previous wireless company that died out. Now we have a 40mb up/down connection + they pay me rent on the use of my tower.

How much rent do they pay? Did you have to pay for the tower or did the previous company that used it put it up?

We have Frontier and have had a lot of issues also. They been out several times and rewired from the pole to the house and that helped some. They replaced the modem, did some rewiring out in town on the same line and that helped with it dropping us frequently. Still don't get the advertised speed but it is better. Fellow said we are on the end of the line so we will always be slower but it is way better than our old satellite internet - that was REALLY bad!

The DSL modem is also an issue.
Service providers supply "free" modems.
They acquire the cheapest ones they can get. 99% of the time,, you get a refurbished modem.

My SIL talked me into buying one new off of Amazon.
The one I pruchased has been flawless.

Rebuilt, serviced,, whatever,, that modem was returned for a reason.
I have never been 100% happy with any factory refurbished anything,,,

Been a long year, but finally got moved. Unfortunately the place we moved to have very poor internet. We only have Frontier available for a land based internet. I was excited when they said I would have connections of up to 40 mbs. The problem is the connection is very poor and we get kicked off several times a day. We have had the tech guy up three times and have been on hold to tech support more times than I would like to count. I tried posting this earlier and got kicked off when I hit submit new thread.

Has anyone had a similar experience and was the company able to resolve the issue?

It is getting to the point I am considering a satellite internet provider such as excide or hughs net. I have not heard much positive about satellite providers but have heard they are getting better.

Comments, thoughts, suggestions?

Generally speaking Frontier sucks. We have Frontier landline for phone. It works until it rains heavily then have to wait 2-3 days for them to fix it. This has been going on for years but they have been unable/unwilling to permanently fix the problem. Keep getting colorful brochures in the mail about their Internet capabilities but when you call them it's always "not available in your area".

Had Hughsnet 5 years ago and they were even worse than Frontier. But perhaps as you say they have gotten better? :confused3:

Currently have Verizon wireless 4G and it works well but rather expensive.
