My suggestion is to lure them away from your house. If you have the right equipment, it should not be too hard. Put one of these in some remote location over the nearest town. If you know for sure where they are entering and exiting the house, wait until after sunset when they are all out then block up the hole. They'll survive and find a new place to live. Or, if you have a barn or other outbuilding you can mount a bat house. As other people have posted, they're really good to have around for mosquito control.

That was my dad's suggestion too. But how will I be sure they are all out and don't inadvertently trap one in the soffit?

Found this one today. They appear to have clean noses. We are going to hang a bat house then open the soffit at night to make sure they are out them seal it up tight.

If you can figure out where they are coming in from, you can install a bat excluder. In a nutshell, its a one-way bat valve. They can go out, but they can't come in.

Also, allegedly, bats don't like lights. So put some lightbulb sockets in your attic and put in 7w compact fluorescent or better yet, LED bulbs. They don't consume much energy, LEDs will last for years so you won't have to keep changing them, and the bats will find somewhere else to roost.

When cleaning up wear respritory protection as there can be some nasties in the droppings.

Yes, nasties as in histoplasmosis. Spores that get into your lungs and lodge there causing permanent scarring.

I used one of these in the early evening. He moved out just as soon as I turned it on. I figured they are just flying rats so it might work and it did, at least in my case. Left it on for a few weeks and haven't seen a sign of them since.

That's what I was going to recommend. Wait until night time when they are out feeding and remove the soffit and put the bat house nearby. Following day clean out and close the soffit up tight. Day before the party, move the bat house to a new home. Hopefully you have time to deal with this with as little disturbance to them as possible.
