Up to 117,000 dead!

I saw those photos on another site. Very tragic. Some of those photos are quite shocking at how much the landscape has changed. Here is a site that features home videos taken during the initial wave impact. There are also photos. It sure gives you a perspective of all the destruction. Up until I saw the photos and videos I had no idea how bad it really was. The news really doesn't show much.

The death toll is not 400,000, but one of the ambassadors, if I recall he was from Indonesia, said he expected the death toll, once disease was included into the final figures, could reach 400,000. He made that statement when the official death toll was well below what it is now. It remains to be seen how bad this will get, but there is some belief that the immunizations that were rushed into the areas for several water borne diseases will help reduce the number who die from disease.

I know. I also knew about the ambassador's guess (as well as other guesses, most by people who are not qualified) about the potential total.

I was questioning the source of the statement that 400,000 had died as a direct result of the tsunami and earthquake. The current estimate of direct deaths is 'nearly 156,000'.

I'm sorry about the error. I don't watch television a lot but I heard the 400,000 number at some time when I was scanning through the channels. I couldn't remember the source but the number just stuck in my mind.
