Thanks, ya I had to back right off quite a bit and it seemed to tighten up more after I turned the shaft a few times?
Didn't understand that?
Thanks for the reply Randy.

So finally have everything back together and just tried turning it over and had a big backfire???
Want to make sure I don't screw anything else up... So not sure what to check first?
The governor was changed so unsure if I should check that first?
Slow or fast idle screws?
Didn't want to keep turning it over and cause any problems?

Check the flywheel key... That is probably what was wrong with it to start with... Also you may want to take a look at the push rods see if they're bent... Remember you did say you couldn't understand why you set the valve lash and it seems to change a little get a little tighter when you turned the engine over a time or two ...But I would look at that Flywheel Key First...

Sorry for my ignorance but what is the flywheel key?
The camshaft gear was the initial problem, which was stripped. Pushrods seemed fine when I had them apart. Lined the two marks up on the camgear and crank gear so timing should be OK? Changed to the new springs with kit and new tappets. Changed governor grear, water pump gear and oil pump gear.
Also the valve lash was just with hand turning over not cranking with key, double and triple checked it so that should be OK as well?
Looking at the tech manual today and I can definitely adjust the governor to proper placement but not sure if that would even cause a carb backfire?
Is it possibly a carb issue?
As always thanks for replies and appreciate the knowledge of you guys.

You said The Pushrods seemed fine when I had them apart. But did you check them By rolling them on a flat piece of glass to make sure they where not bent? Sometimes you can't see a small bend with your eyes... The valve Lash should not change just from turning the motor over by hand... Something not set right or Bent would cause it not to read the same each time it was checked... Also you may try to get help here... Well stopped and talked with a local mechanic and said to double check the valve clearances.
Some how one of the rods had come off the valve? Thinking it must be exhaust valve and that us what caused the carb backfire?
Checked the clearances and closed it up and fired right up!!
The first task will be to get the mower deck on and get it working.
Anyone know if I should run it easy for a certain amount of hours?
Again thanks for all the help!!
