Tractor's looking great. What kind of primer/top coat are you using? I'm working on a couple of trucks that will need painting. I probably will use a body shop for the cabs but I may paint the frames myself.

For primer I'm using valspar heavy duty / high solids oil based metal primer.

For a top coat I'm using the valspar BPS tractor paint. I'm sure it is an alkyd or at most, and acrilic modified enamil, depending on what version of their paint you get.

SG: that's one handsome 951. You really hustle on these refurbs.

Outstanding job! That is one fine looking and unusual old Ford. I check here daily for your updates on it. Thanks for the thread on it and the photos.

Soundguy - I am curious: what kind of paint do you use? One the ones with epoxy hardener or something else? HVLP sprayer, or something cheaper? I brush painted my Farmall's hood a couple years back, and within a year it was faded and yucky again. I get the paint from a tractor sales and parts outfit near here.

I want to tackle my '54 NAA, and don't want to go to the trouble of painting unless it will last a few years.

Oops, sorry. I see that you alreasy answered my paint question. Still curious about the sprayer.

I use a couple different sprayers.

I used hvlp, cheapy from a chinese store.. about 25$.. I also used a cheap syphon gun.. or 'guns' one 15$.. one 9$.. one is a quart gun.. the other is a 6oz touch up gun.. quart gun is 7ys old.. costs ? 25$ now at chinese store.

Also used a pressure pot gun.. campbel hausfeld.. 3800 series...

overall.. didn't like the pressure gun.. threw way too much paint.. was fine for cast iron.. but made runs on sheet metal.

hvlp was fine.. but have to get used to using it after painting from a syphon gun for years.

syphon gun is my favorite... good even coat.. don't throw the paint out too fast... if you thin correctly and hold yer toungue right.. it's darn hard to make it run. downside is it uses the most air of all the units mentioned.. so really wants a large compressor.. or will work over a small one.. also makes the most overspray of all mentioned.

for instance.. on my pressure pot gun.. I put a quart of chassie paint down and the comp obly kicked one once... putting a quart of paint out on the sheet metal with the sypon gun made the comp kick on 3-4 times! ( 5hp / 30g comp )

would like to add that the HVLP gun is probably the superior product compaired to syphon or pressure pot. I chalk up my poor performance to my low grade painting skills, and my unfamiliarity with the gun. I've litterally only used it once now... I figure with more practice and adjustment to thinning the paint.. I'll have it down pat soon.

Soundguy--I realize this is a three year old thread but I'm on a similar quest to find and (hopefully minimally) refurbish a 941, 951 or 961 Ford. Wide end for me, however.
Are there any pointers you learned in the rebuild process that might be helpful or any advice to offer about that series tractor? Also, any finished photos with the decals on it?
Any advice or info appreciated.

since that last posting I've probably done a half dozen more rowcrops.. :) wide front ends and narrow fronts, dual wheel and single wheel.

i can post some pics of a 4000 I did with ford factory wide front to gige you an idea of what it looks like. I also did a 950 narrow front and a 740 narrow front.

if you have any specific questions, ask em.. probbaly easier to answer specific, than talk in general.

I will say that if you have play in the steering box at the op platform.. get it all adjusted and worked on before putting the tin back on and air cleaner and battery box, etc.. as the row crop steering box at the op platform ( there is a sterring box int he front pedistal too ), is very different from the ag model. it actually has an external thrust bearing adjustment for one thing.. but to get at it.. the bat/tray is in the way.. :)

I find the extra height on the row crops makes them easier to work on, for me anyway. with frame rails you have more to support hem with if you work on the front end..e tc..

also.. just the regular stuff.. make sure you have the fuel system in order, and resist the urge to go to a rubber line for fuel near the manifold.. .. brake line is easy to bend up and cheap.. etc.

here are a bunch of pics. i do reccomend a bumper.. I made one from a repop ag model bumper, and welded a mount palte on it to mount to the front bolt pattern on the pedistal.. ther eis an oil drain plug on the bedistal.. so leave an access hole for it. also.. the drain plug will be an inverted plug usually.. i hate em and convert to a square headed plug... otherwise once they wear.. they are hard to remove.

ditto on thelil plugs on the rear drop box oil pans on the bull gears.. save yerself some grief and go with new plugs.. and put thread goop on them so you don't have to overtightent hem to stop leaks... saves hassel next time you service them.

ask any question ya got.. if I know the answer I'll post it.. :)

Thanks Soundguy, great post and photos. My desire is just for another conquest to restore something I like and have fun in the process. I have had an IH 274 hi-crop offset and a Deere 900 HC before and really liked them. The Fords were always special in my mind because of the attractive styling, ready availability of parts and fair prices. Plus they are a significant part of American agricultural history.

The tractor height and paint scheme of the 901 series is appealing to me so I figure a 941, 951 or 961 wide front would work OK. No Select 'O Speed. Maybe a 900 series would work too and I'm also open to a hi crop/offset 800 series. Maybe the deal will just find me since I think there are a lot of these in the midwest. It's interesting you mention it but I have thought of an early version Ford 4000 as another outstanding example.

Thanks again for the excellent photos and comments. I'll advise when I find something.
