Updating my old trailer

Thats one nice trailer. I have never seen one setup to tow a secound car. Is there a brand name, or was it home made?

I've never seen a trailer setup like that for towing two cars either. I was on a business trip to Arkansas once when I saw a pickup truck pulling two trailers hooked back to back, while it was going through the drive-thru at McDonalds/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. I have to assume that it is legal to do that in some states. A setup like that would sure grab the attention of a State Trooper here in New York though.

Neil,

Yes, it's legal here. Is it not there?

And thanks for the compliment on the old girl. It's time she got some well-deserved attention.

Paul,

Thank you for the compliment on her. It's been an incredibly handy thing to have around. I've hauled lumber, steel light poles & lights, sign posts & signs. implements, my tractor with FEL & BH and, believe it or not, I've even hauled trucks on it. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

First a disclaimer: I am a dealer for this particular brand of trailer so. I did not show this with the goal of selling any to anyone here. That having been said I'll tell you the manufacturer is Southern Sales and I'm sure there are dealers for these all over. There are lots of options and configurations available your local dealer can tell you about if you're interested in one.

Even though I'm a dealer for them, I didn't even get this one from them. I bought it used at an auction simply because it was cheap. A slightly newer red one sold at the same auction two weeks later for 75% more money. Even with what I've done to this one I'm way under the money paid for that one and, quite frankly, this one is now better in a few ways. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

It sure looks like it would come in handy. I got to get something like it one of these days. With all the project cars I have, and all the other toys, a trailer is always usefull. So just so I get an idea, how much do new ones run? Also does the builder have a web site? Thanks.

Paul,

These guys don't even have an intercom, much less Internet. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif It's a classic good ol' boy operation where about half the people there are related by blood or marriage (or possibly both, but that's another issue). /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

If you'd only be looking to haul one at a time you can get the same trailer in 16' or 20' lengths without the swivel platform. A two speed manual hydraulic pump is standard but I would highly recommend the electric motor for obvious reasons. I prefer a battery box on the trailer to power the motor but if you're always using the same tow vehicle you might want to just run a line back from your battery instead.

The standard 3500 lb. axles would be plenty though 6000 lb. axles are available. I would think you can do as well buying a winch yourself as ordering one on the trailer but it is an option I would highly recommend regardless.

That should cover the basics. I'd guess you could buy one like I just described at retail for around $3,000-$3,500 or so. A new one like the one I have with about all the whistles and bells would likely run you somewhere in the $5,000 neighborhood. If I'm off on these numbers I'm probably high just because I don't know what dealers in your area are doing on pricing. There's no MSRP on these so it's tough to guess.

If you get further along on this and think I might be able to help, please feel free to contact me. Again, I'm not trying to sell you one but rather just offering to provide some assistance. Also, I'm not touting this brand as the absolute best around. There may well be better out there. I just found that for me this was a good value for the money. The two car hauler like mine is something I've not seen from any other manufacturer and it's what first caught my eye years ago.

My first experience with this company was as a customer on one of their car dollys. I later got my first trailer from them based on that experience. It was only after owning and using their equipment that I became a dealer for them. One thing I will have to say is that I've never had a complaint from any customer about one of their products nor have I had one myself.

No Gary we couldn't do that here. Even towing a vehicle behind another vehicle using an "A-frame" is not legal in most states.

Then again we HAVE TO wear seatbelts and I understand you dont??

Any pics of you towing a trailer towing a vehicle?

I'd love to show my mates that !

Cheers

Morning Neil,

Up here on top of the world we're allowed to tow double trailers. In fact some of the manufacturers of the simple angle iron trailers will come down the road towing six or more of them. They stack them two to three high on up to three trailers. The back of the front two trailers have a bracket welded on so a ball will fit for towing another trailer.

Some of our more affluent citizens will tow a fifth wheel travel trailer and a boat down the road. I've heard that most states require the first trailer being a fifth wheel under those circumstances. Of course when it comes time to back the boat in the water the fifth wheel travel trailer has been parked. Backing up one trailer is a bugger bear sometimes. Backing up two is all about luck.

My gooseneck had a ball I put on the back of it so I could tow my cement mixer behind it. I only had one problem with that combination. The first ball was used and evidently just a tad wore to the undersized. I hit a bump and became unhooked. It was in the evening and I was lucky I happened to check in the mirrors and noticed sparks.

Nothing was hurt in the incident since the safety chains held and I stopped slow. But I did take the precaution of being real nice for the following months trying to earn back some of the time I lost in the panic. I don't believe in much but I do have a feeling that panic causes such wear and tear on the bod that a life can be shortened by it.

Morning Neil,

You have to remember that up here in the Estados Unidos we believe in individual rights. The amount of trailers you tow doesn't kill people, people kill people./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
