John Deere 425( soon to be 455)
Hi

Well I have had my 425AWS since March and it is great tractor, however it is a little hard on fuel, especially with the 60 inch deck. My local Dealer is now getting in a 455AWS with 60 inch deck with 823hours on it. How is the Yanmar on fuel consumption compared to the Kawi 20hp? Any major problems with the 455, that I should be aware of. I am going to talk to the dealer tommorrow about the 455, and get a trade in price on the 425. I bought the 425 on the spot because I got a darn good deal on it, and she had low hours. While I would like to keep the 425, I unfortunately can not swing it right now. I should have walked away from the 425, had I known about a few 455AWS's coming in. But sometimes you get caught up in the momment. I have seen one 455 with 6000+ hours on it, so I know these are a well built machine. So should I keep the 425 or try and trade for the 455? I would love to hear some opnions about the 455. I know the 425 is great. Take Care Jason B

I have heard nary a bad word said about the 455... Anybody that's got one won't give it up --- and anyone that wants one has a hard time finding 'em.

800+ hours is just getting the rings seated on that Yanmar diesel!

Be real interested to hear how much the dealer is asking for it!

Good luck!

I've had my 455 for a little over a year now. I have added a 3 point hitch and PTO and work it almost as hard as my 4410. The thing sips fuel. If all I did was mow an acre twice a week, I don't know how long a tank a fuel would last. But, I am always dragging a trailer full of mulch or running a roller pump or using the front blade to finish grading where I can't get with my 4410 -- so I have to fill it every 5 or 6 weeks.

When I mow, it is WOT with a 60 inch deck and Power Flow MCS mowing right at an acre -- and I usually cannot see a change in the fuel gauge from start to finish.

Unless the dealer beats you up on the trade, or the 455 has been "rode hard and put away wet", I would jump on it.

I'll second that on the 455. I happened on one at my dealer with just over 200 hours. It was a 98 and looked new. I was there just getting filters and I bought it on the spot. It has the 60 inch deck and is very good on fuel. I'm hanging onto mine.

Second the commotion - I've got a 455/60 and it is ridiculously good on fuel. I would not be surprised if it uses half the fuel that your 425 does.

Hi Guys

Went to the dealer today and looked at the 455. She is in very clean shape. The only thing missing on it is those orange refectors up by the side of the headlights, other then that, she is in real nice shape. Dealer let me take her for a drive. Boy does that Yanmar have power.. Definately a big difference between it and the Kawi. I find the Yanmar to be quiter as well. I really like the fact that I can start the mower deck at idle or have throttle at half way. Dealer is asking $6,900 for the 455. I was given a trade in price on my 425 at $5,700. I think I am going to bit the bullet and trade. I will keep you posted. Take Care Jason B

Jason,

Sounds like you may have found a deal. Those side reflectors are one of the few PIA areas with these tractors, and especially the left side one. Don't ask me why I know! :)

Jason, don't let the reflectors hold you back, they're like $7 each - or there's a guy on eBay that sell them for a lot more. You could tell the dealer you'll take the deal if he fixes them...

Hi

Well I talked to the salesman today, and it looks like the 455AWS will be coming home with me. Dealer is going to change the filters, put the new reflectors on it, and wash her up. I myself will wax the 455 when she arrives home. Likewise I have to get my 425 shined up for next week when she goes to the dealer. From what the salesman was telling me, 455's are hard to come by around here. Not many were sold( due to price), and those that are out there usually stay on the farm for years. I know that 455's do sell quick when they come in. The same dealer sold two 455's three weeks after they were traded, and another 455AWS with 1,415 hours was only in for 1 day before she was sold! In fact the 455AWS I bought, just arrived a few days before I went to look at her. I thought, now is the chance and jumped on it. With only 823hrs my 455 will enjoy along life ahead. She will be coming to a good home as I really like to keep my equipment in top shape. This is my first Diesel Garden tractor, so I may have to call on you guys for help if I have any troubles with the 455. Take Care Jason B

1*I just missed a steel on a JD 455 with only 511 hours on it here at my local JD dealer. $3500.
2*Diesels just sip fuel compared to the gas guzzlers.
3* Haven't heard of any, but plenty of rave reviews.
4* Let us know what he says!
5* If the 455 has low hours, in good shape and the price is rite go for it.
6*The 455 is JDs most popular highly acclaimed and most sought after garden tractor.
7* The 455 is much greater.
