Solution found:eek:

I was able to finally work on the tractor. Sometimes the obvious is the best to look at. I found that where the exhaust pipe off the engine attaches to the muffler there is a collar that was only spot welded (if at all). the weld broke and the collar was flopping inside the muffler. Becasue the muffler is crimped it cannot be opened with ease. I was able to grab the collar and using ss rivets get it back in place. Even better than new. Started the engine and voilla, no more noise. save some pennies too.

FYi, removingthe exhaust pipe off the engine is tricky, the two bolts are actually studs and cease very easily. A torch and some lock-free took care of the broken post. $8.50/ ea at sears, but the are M-8's and $2.25 at the local hardware store.

Not bad for a novice i think.

Congrats on the repair. Awesome when you can diagnose, and fix the problem. Gives you confidence to build on so you can attack the next one. Good luck!

Great job analyzing the problem and addressing it! BTW, someone wrongly mentioned that the engine has solid lifters, they do have hydraulic lifters and require use of 10W-30 oil, or if above 55 degrees can use straight 30W oil.

Muffler baffles breaking loose inside the muffler was a frequent problem on these tractors, resulting in the RH cylinder (as viewed when seated on tractor) running very hot, eventually taking out the head gasket on that cylinder;glad you caught your issue in time!
