Very nice machine he has.... but he needs to get one to use, so that he can keep that one nice.

You know there are some people who would have never taken it out of the box. My daughter has a friend whos Mom has a room full of Barbi dolls all still in the box. No one is allowed to play with them./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Use it and enjoy. Very nice machine, tell us how you came across such a jewel. I wonder how many guys are on the phone right now calling all the Yanmar dealers to see what is still setting in the warehouse.

You know what would really make us envious......tell us you only paid $4,000 or so for it.

Enjoy!!!!

The purchase of the new YM187 was an epic journey with an unanticipated ending (particularly financial).

For two years I had considered finding a compact diesel tractor for my hobby farm. I have a JCB 210S backhoe for the major infrastucture work so when I decided to obtain a tractor the spec was that it should be a Yanmar two wheel drive Min 15 PTO HP. (two wheel drive because of the anticipated cost with no worries about resale) I wanted it for its PTO, future orchard and field work which included potato growing and sundry grounds keeping and homestead tasks.

The last most limiting part of the spec is that due to my large in diameter the tractor would have to have an open seat deck that could be modified for placement.
The new YM187 you may note has the seat displaced rearward with just enough space for me to steer.

Cabin fever spurred me to visit Lowes of Indiana (800 miles away) in the early spring to find a tractor. I live in the northernmost part of Michigan with no agricultural
support within 200 miles. Lowes was chosen because they seemed to have a diverse inventory and I could sort out the tractor fit issue.

When I got there they did have the inventory they said they had - I quickly sorted out suitable fits and was going to buy a 2cyl 1701 2WD when they showed me the YM187 still in the crate. Love at first sight!! I paid twice the amount that I wanted to. No wife, no accountant and the force of tractor fever struck. Because the tractor was not ready I had to return 2 weeks later for pickup. Talk about tractor fever.

By the way they had two other smaller HP 4WD tractors in the same condition but I passed on them. I think they were a YM14?D and YM167D.

The package was not perfect in that the steering wheel and the ROPS were missing. The ROPS was not of great concern because I have to modify the setup to fit my large carcass anyways.

Thanks to Roger, he had a copy of the original sales/specs that were of considerable help to ease my mind in the two week interim. The YM187 seems to be rare in the discussions. Also, thanks to you guys in the Yanmar discussion groups for your information and enthusiasm.

Sorry, its getting dirty, with 6.8 hours on the meter, tilled today and I know that its working well because
the seagulls visited my fields for the first time ever.

Now to figure out how to wire in a brake engaged IDIOT
light.

Amen on the break engaged idiot light. I have come to realize the squealing noise I hear is the locked breaks. Took me a while, but now I know:).

Yeah, sometimes I take off and wonder why things squeal and one tire spins and the other doesn't and the tractor just sort of goes sideways, oh DUH the parking brake's on!! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif BTW, how much did they want for the 167D?

Should be easy enough to do. Get a 'feeler' or roller switch from an electronics parts house... radio shack carries a few.
It is essentially a switch with a small are and a roller on the end. Make a bracket near the parking break lever that allows the 'set' brake to make the switch contact. You may have to play with a few springs or flexible levers to come up with a workable bracket, etc.. epoxy putty may help.
Perhaps even easier than a physical contact switch, a magnetic switch like that used on door/window alarms would be very suitable, and require no physical linkage.. just rough proximity between the switch and magnet. The magnet could be mounted on the break lever, and the switch mounted to a close coresponding adjacent location on the block. 2 or more magnets could be used to allow for play, etc, in the break linkage... set it so that only when the break lever is all the way out, that the switches are not contacted. Attatch the switch inline with a red 12v blinking led, w/ power coming from ignition switch. If the ignition is on, and the break is engaged, the led will blink. The led could be panel mounted right near the ignition switch... A buzzer could also be added / substituted. Optionally, you could also add a nc relay to the starter solenoid circuit, as an ignition cutout... if the break is set, when the key is on, the cutout relay is powered, and opens the circuit to the starter solenoid.. no ignition. Depending on the type of key switches, and how the terminals are wired, you may have to play with it a bit to come up with the desired effect.. but these are really basic circuit ideas, and should be very adaptable to most setups.

A combo of ignition cutout, blinking red led, and a mild buzzer might be a good trio...

Just ideas..

They wanted over $6k for the YM167D.

Good idea with the buzzer on the brake lever system
This will be one of many winter projects which will include
analog gages for oil and coolant temps.

The weight box was an expedient fix to counter the
tiller weight. I am using an old truck chain box,
its actually very useful with about 140 lbs of cast iron
on the bottom and has room enough to store tools, lunch,
and enough bug dope to prevent anemia.

Myabe a flashing light but the buzzer would be a "no" for me. I have let the thing run, in the shop, with the brakes set. Would not want that buzzer driving me nuts. Probably a short trip anyway.

Remember, it wouldn't run all the time, just when the ignition is on ( if you wired it that way ).
