USAF to try fuel from coal in B52

Has anyone else read about this? A B52 will burn a 50/50 mix of conventional fuel and fuel made from coal in 2 engines on a B52. For the syn nuts the "coal oil" is considered synthetic from what I read

I believe it's Syntroleum that is working with/for the Air Force.

Heard it on the news last night. They did a short interview with the founder of the company. Interesting information. "...Air Force`s stated goal to be free of all foreign oil within 10 years. "

Have a friend that worked on the project making the fuel for the Syntroleum and once they finished EVERYONE was layed off/fired.

I hope it turns out to be economically and environmentally feasible to get things going with the coal/liquid fuel conversion.That's one resource we have a good supply of. I have a nice coal "seam" in my front yard under a few feet of topsoil. Seems like everyone gets fired up on alternative fuels when oil skyrockets and the oil companies react by lowering the prices enough to make it a losing proposistion. It must not have been too profitable if Syntroleum had to can everyone.

From what I have read turning coal or tar sands into fuel will make money as long as a barrel of oil is over $25. A barrel is still over $60

I saw a guy on the WSJ TV show awhile back and he was talking about Nexen. They are a Canadian outfit that refines the oil sands, he said their magic number was $50.00 a barrel. Don't know if the process is much different or if we were listening to two different "experts".

Interesting that when new process or alternative fuel makes news or is about too, the barrel price of oil goes down.
