usb flash drive to wifi

was so tempted to buy a 3 to 6 disk NAS (network attached storage) box. due to so many low price NAS hard drives a few with 5 year warranties. just not enough cash to see it happen.
I have a Linkstation Duo and have been very happy with it. The management interface is SLOOOOOOW but it works well for moving files around.

3 routers, toasted not sure why... went to start upgrading one pc, and router in house, didn't want to connect to WAN. resets nada. out of warranty. went to grab one of the other routers. and complete brick. no power no nothing. "arlight" went and grab another one... same thing *arghs* thankfully 2 of them were under warranty.

went to go pull off data from a old HDD via a external usb to sata setup. to deal with new SDD's. and glad i turned TV off before hand. due to i heard a click, sitch, sitch, sitch. and then a sudden smell of rubber / plastic smell. power cable going to the old hdd burned up through at least 1 of the 4 molex wires, i think it might of burned up through 2 more but welded together. another few seconds i would imagine i would of had a fire @@ the HDD, was to hot to touch, as i attempted to pull it out the sata and power cables. no clue what happened :/ 5 to 30 minutes before hand. external adapter, was working perfectly with other HDD's. and the same HDD. as i was trying to find the one HDD that had the data i wanted on it.

this is a first for me and having a power cable melting and nearly catching on fire.

My brother had that happen to him, power supply started pushing 12 volts on the 5 volt connectors IIRC. Fried his drive, I hope yours fared better.

looking at open wrt and dd wrt, open source firmware for the tplink wdr3500 *rubbing chin* thinking i might pass on it. default firmware was a bit funky at first. upgraded to the latest tplink firmware... and began messing around...

in microsoft windows "file explorer" was able to set...
ftp://tplinklogin.net to set FTP access, ((acts like a folder in file explorer))
\\tplinklogin.net to map a network drive, so it acts like C:\ D:\ or other drive on computer.

able to setup "media server" as well, so pictures, video, music, can be shared with other devices. say cell phone, tv, tablet, etc...

the only thing really lacking is direct web browser upload/download ability. that does not require FTP program.

=============
was disappointed in the...samsung WB35F camera. WIFI built into camera.

wifi stuff...
--mobile link / remove veiwfinder not able to deal with yet (requires cell phone / tablet) to send/receive pictures or use cellphone as a remote control for camera / view finder. no PC version for the app *big frown*
--email funciton, little funky / slow but works. (no touch screen)
--sns/cloud (facebook picasa, youtube, dropbox) not worth it for me.
--samsunglink = DLNA / media server like doing. windows media player.. no direct way that i have found yet to copy/paste/move/delete stuff easily.

usb stuff..
plug in usb cable to computer and access camera like a normal drive letter (C:\, D:\, etc...)

would be nice for FTP access or network share access via WIFI. to connect to, and send/receive pictures/videos.

looks like i am off to find a windows 8.1 program that works with DLNA protocol to copy/cut/paste, auto backup / transfer pictures/movies. windows media player just does not cut it.
