Hi...

Any experience using this or a similar rust prevention product on equipment ?

"These proven products help you fight rust
• Protect your equipment from the elements
• Penetrates deep into rusted areas

FLUID FILM® has proven itself for over 50 years in the highly corrosive marine environment of ships and offshore drilling rigs in preventing rust. Derived from wool wax (Lanolin), specially refined mineral oils and rust inhibiting agents. This highly effective formula penetrates and protects immediately after application in areas of high humidity, solutions of salt such as fertilizers, and in corrosive industrial atmospheres. FLUID FILM not only protects against, and stops rust but also is capable of penetrating heavily corroded and/or frozen parts such as nuts, bolts, shafts and more. Long lasting and will not evaporate like other rust preventatives. Easily applied by airless spray equipment, brush or roller. Will not harm painted surfaces, plastic or most rubbers. Protect your expensive equipment from corrosion on land or water with this non-toxic, non-hazardous user safe rust preventative. "

Thanks...

I use a spray-on one by LPS I get from Grainger. Leaves a waxy oily film. You don't want to use it on something delicate with moving parts (like an adjustable square). But is great for something stored. I also use a product called Phospho, which is some kind of phosphate, available from paint stores and maybe Home Depot by a different name. It leaves almost a thin black primer-like coat on steel and will prevent rust for sometime. I also use it on rust as a converter when I don't have time to grind to bare metal.

I have no experience with the Fluid Film product. Can you paint over that product ? I have had good results with Rustoleum rusty metal primer with a topcoat of Rustoleum on tractors and equipment.

I use "Fluid Film" on bare metal when an item is to be stored. It leaves a wax like oily coating. I have observed no rust on anything that has been coated. On the other hand, I never conducted a controlled experiment, like coating half of a cylinder rod to see if it did rust without Fluid Film. My feeling is that it is effective, however, I couldn't prove it is more effective than any other oily coating.

Thanks for the replies...

Intend to use this or a similar product for parts of equipment/tools that won't be painted/repainted... like a grader blade that won't be used for months... trailer hitch/trailer components... stored mower deck... whatever...

Seems it should work/help...

A can of that fluid film was included in the maintenance kit (filters, spark plug, etc.) that I got from Country Home Products for my DR trimmer/mower a few years ago. I set it on a shelf in the back of the shop and forgot about it until we were having a garage sale when we sold the farm, so I never tried it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I use gallons of Fluid Film NAS every year. Great stuff. For all you folks that let your cars, trucks, farm equipment rust out over the years -- there is no need to let them rust away. Over the years you are losing 10's of thousands of dollars to rust. Think about it.

Dave,

My can of WD-40 seems to work wonders on the blade with rust prevention and removal.

Next time you go to Harbor Freight pick up a gallon of WD-40 for ten bucks and put some in a spray bottle. It goes a long way, is inexpensive, and works. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use some stuff called Extend (think that's it). You can buy it in the paint department in Lowes. It reacts with rust and forms a paintable black film. It's similar to stuff that isn't sold now, called Trustan and others.

I used it on my snow plow blade where some paint got rubbed off. It hasn't rusted at all.

I use it on almost anything that is rusty. If it's too rusty, I'll remove the rust by electrolysis first. Did this on my Gravely garden plow.
