Nuru, mowing season will soon begin. In fact, if I wanted to I could go mow right now. I better go pull out the deck and check it over, oil, belts, etc. Here she is ready to go!!!!!! Yippee /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif . (sorry it is orange but it might offer ecouragement anyway)

The 54" deck is heavy enough for ANY turf-type mowing use, commercial or residential. For any heavier use than this deck can handle, you should use a rotary cutter, not a grooming mower.

Go for it!!
150 hrs isn't all that much. Just look it over real good. Make sure that the PTO gearbox is in good shape and that the welds look good. Check for excessive wear on the mounting areas. What about the mounting kit? Make sure you get that also.
Is it from a dealer or private? If its from a dealer, get as of a guarantee as you can!! If its private, spend time looking it over.

Terry, it is a private owner in VA, near you. I need to figure out how I am going to ship it. I am a little too lazy to go pick it up (~5 hours drive). A dealer down there recommended this deck and owner. So I am going to talk to this guy, and if I can get him lower I will do it, but if I can't, I will get a new one as low as I can get it.

Hey I did talk to the owner of that used 54", and he is planning to send some pictures in email to me. I will at least be able to examine it from afar. If it looks solid, I hope that we can make a deal including some reasonable shipping. Oh well wish me luck.

when you get there, open the gear box and look for chips in the oil and surrounding area. [don't freak if there is a little, don't buy if the gears show lots of wear].
if you can't tell, then you are ok.
worn gears due to lack of lubrication tend to stand out.
also see if any of the mower spindles wiggle [they should turn easily, but they should not move side to side].
the above items pretty much apply to all machines too [lathes, saws, milling machines, etc.]

Why did the guy up the price? Still not a bad deal.
Did you check for any other possible ground shippers? Might be cheaper. We get garden supplies shipped from Georgia to Maryland. It get here in two days and they charge $70 for freight up to 500lbs. The company is Estes and it is delivered to our door.
Again, did you ask about the mounting hardware and is it included. And do not forget the manuals! You'll need them for maintenance and setup.

Hello Terry, sorry I was not clear, he wanted $800 plus shipping orginally, now he is willing to accept $700 plus shipping of <$100 bucks. I think that is cheaper. Do you have a number for Estes? do you know if they deliver to the North East? Thie current shipping is <$100 for 2day air, and I do think that is not bad, as it will be sent to within 20 minutes of my house, so...etc. The only concern I have is that the owner reports that it vibrates in the highest mowing position. does yours do that? i think it needs a little work?

fc, that is what I was thinking, 2000 deck, he used it to mow 5 acres, he indicates 150 hours for that time, 2 seasons. looking consevatively you can figure 6 hours per week, x 4 x 4 months = 96 hours per year 2000, 2001, equals 192, so he is under from what I can tell. i am still working out how we will exchange funds.
