Used Amsoil 5W/40 for BX23 oil change and now smell a little burning oil

My guess you haven't seated your rings as yet and the thinner oil just slides by them. No way would I drain it. The 10W rating on oils is for a limited range. If you go to your owner's manual and look in the viscosity chart, you will find that the 10 stops long before you run out of lower temps. Thin oil helps in initial lube requirements at startup. Big dogs in the business of selling equipment and others that maintain it say that the majority of your wear on your engine occurs at initial startup....before the oil gets circulating........this is coming from a thicker is better guy that learned his lesson on his new Ram Hemi.....badass engine.......with WARNING that you had better use 5w-20 or else......course 0 beats 5 but not everybody makes 0 like Mobil 1 does.

At 750HRS on the clock, I’d have to think the rings are seated. Also, the Amsoil isn’t thinner since it’s a 40 wt oil just like the Kubota that was used previously. If you have an oil burning engine, it’s going to do it no matter what oil you use.

JMHO -but, as nikerret indicated - I bet you have spilled a bit of the new oil and it's simply burning off.

I agree totally, you likely spilled oil when filling. I really doubt that you would smell a burned oil smell if it were actually burning it. An engine burning oil produces a blue smoke ( if it is burning enough oil to be an issue) and it doesn't smell like the burned oil smell that you get from oil on a hot manifold or hot engine.

A 750 hour engine should not have loose rings or gaskets. It is true that synthetic oil is a lot better than conventional oil when it comes to finding a leaky gasket but I wouldn't think that is your problem

Another point that I forgot to mention. 5W-40 oil is what I would run year round in your cold winter climate. It is also good for summer time temps also being that it is 40 weight when hot. Actually it is a 40W oil that has 5W(W stands for winter) properties when cold. It makes for quick circulation of the oil at cold (and warm) temperatures so it works much better that a thicker oil at start up.

It doesn't get that cold here in Arkansas but I run Shell Rotella T6 in everything I own, including gasoline engines. It simplifies my bulk oil purchases. I can just grab a jug of oil off the shelf and know that I have the right oil for the engine since that is all that is on the shelf for motor oil.
