Used BX 23 delivered today, question about hydro

Welcome to the world of the BX! Re; your inoperative switch. The prior owner was probably a clean freak (as I am) in that after every use, the little BX probably got a bath. The only problem with that is the switches fill up with water & rust. I bought my BX last May and have had two t/s and one hazard switch replaced (warranty). I was amazed at how quickly the replacement switch failed. I still bathe the 'bota regularly but am carefull around the switches.

It's good to see another rookie here with a BX23. I got mine just a few weeks ago too and I don't mind telling you I am tickled pink with it.
I have gobs of junk before and it seemed like I spent more time reattaching parts than actually working with it. Well, that has changed. I'm going to have to slow down a bit though with it. The wife will get the idea that I can do more chores around the place now if she realizes it was the poor tractor instead of me, before I got my BX23.
I have wondered about the high range issue also but kind of figured that since hydrostat trans generally lose a little power that high range wasn't the best range to be in when the going got a little difficult.
My dealer also told me that if I got off the seat with the range selector in gear it would shut down. It's doesn't though so I would guess all the dealers are mis-informed about that safety feature. (Or Kubota has a big recall ahead of them)
I don't have the amount of snow here like you do but we get enough and so far the BX's ability to move it has been unexcelled.
Best money I have ever spent for anything.
Kevin

If you open the switch and clean it, then pack it full of Vaseline and it will work fine and the petroleum jelly will keep things lubricated and moisture from causing problems. It will not stop dirt from jamming the switch, but it will make it easier to clean next time.

I was able to fix the 4 ways, its a dual post switch, and the flashers only need 1 post, the other is empty. I moved it to the other side, bent the copper rocker some and applied some dielectric lube.

The light I do not know where it goes. It hangs from the same harness as the switches. The other indicators are in a separate harness, easy checker, fuel, and temp. And the lights are in place for those instruments.
I did not see one for the hour meter. I also noticed a bank of empty light holders, 3 or 4. They are the holes for twisting the bulb assembly into. These empty holders are located below the easy checker lights, but above the switch bank. I just do not know where this light goes. It is attached to the switch harness. Does it just hang there? Also worth noting is the lead to the light is fairly short, say 4 inches at most. I put it in the empty bank, but did not see any thing on the dash illuminated.
Any ideas?

Bill:

You're a bit off. In a hydrostatic, after a small amount of pedal travel, the output of the hydro is able to deliver full torque, and the limit to the torque is fixed (by internal relief valves). The pedal travel will determine the speed out of the hydro. So at small pedal inputs, the torque times low speed is a low output HP, as the pedal is pushed further, the speed goes up but the torque limit is constant, so the output HP goes up as a function of pedal travel (I hope that was clear).

It is not like a mechanical transmission where high ratios give high torque at low speed and low torque at hi speed with low ratios. The output torque is fixed, just the speed varies.
