Used engine for swinger 220

I got an older Swinger wheel loader, its original engine is shot and i need a replacement. The original engine is a Perkins/ Mazda 4.154 I know that parts are hard to find for this particular model so im in search of a different engine to re power this thing. I know i will need some machining to make it all work, I was thinking of finding a used engine from a tractor. What kind of engine is that was produced in high quantities, parts are readily available, and not overly expensive? I dont care if i need to rebuild an engine, just dont want some oddball one that is rare and parts cost a fortune, thats what came out of it.

What does it drive? Fully hydraulic or a mechanical clutch? Does it mate to a bell housing? Need more info, please.

Jim: It has a bell housing that bolts up to a plate, that plate is mounted to a hydrostatic pump. There isn't any clutch, just a spline adapter that bolts to the flywheel that gets coupled to the splined input shaft on the pump.

I would look for a Perkins or a Kubota out of another piece of equipment. Large commercial lawn mowers are prime candidates for engine removals. A tractor with a working engine has too much value to it, whereas a mower that has bad hydros or a shot deck is worth far less.

Yea, i was thinking about tractor engines, but they dont turn up in the junk yard much. I was looking on ebay at used kubotas, but they dont say what kind of hours are on them, im not going to spend 12-1500 on an unknown engine. It may run, but may need rebuilt too. I will keep an eye out for junked equipment with a good engine

I would look at buying a complete mower that runs. It might not move well or the blades / reels might be bad, however it should be able to run. From what I have seen it is often cheaper to buy the whole machine as your not paying for someones labor to remove the engine then take the risk of selling it.

Here is a few pics of the pump, bell housing, and flywheel. Would another model of Perkins bolt up to this bell housing, or am I still going to need some machining work? I would like to be able to keep the original bell housing as it would speed the installation of another engine, but i know how them things go.

Well i found an engine at my local salvage yard, it append to be a Perkins. It was in an old miller trailblazer 55d. The owner of the yard let me bring back the welder to take out the engine in my warm shop. Got it to run before I removed it, sounded pretty good, only problem was alot of smoke upon start up, but probably hadn't been started for alot of years. Once removed and scratching threw tons of dirt and grease, i found out its an older 4-154! it will bolt right up to the pump on the loader. Now my problem is finding parts for it. I need some new seals, front and rear mains for sure. Anyone know where I can find parts for it? Would napa be able to get any parts?
