So a local auction has a 300 gallon poly tank listed. In the description, it says "used for nitrogen".
I'm thinking the tank may be useful for rainwater collection of non-potable water f/u/i the garden.
How does "used for nitrogen" impact usage of the tank?

I think there could be some residual in the plastic.
Mixed with rain water and leaked into your garden, itll make garden grow better.
300G will dilute the residual down to almost nothing.

Any residual means nothing. Rinse it and carry on.

My cynical guess is that "used for nitrogen" is CYA for the auction house. Liquid N is so cold it would embrittle the poly to the point of cracking; pressurized N gas would likely distort the poly so that it leaks. Most likely use was probably nitrogen fertilizer in an aqueous solution, and auction house wants to assure no recourse from the buyer. Google something like "dangers of high nitrogen fertilizer." That is why the nanny state requires those little flags or placards after the lawn company fertilizes.

What is f/u/i?

I wouldn’t have an issue grabbing it to collect rainwater in the garden but I’d give very little for it when you can get a 275 gal food grade IBC tote on pretty much any street corner for $25-60.

Liquid N in solution is very common. I use 28 liquid and 46 granulated all the time. The plastic tank don't know the difference.

Like has been said - it certainly IS NOT liquid N. Most likely an aqueous formulation of some nitrogen product. It would make a good storage container for garden water.

I see IBC totes out and around the wheat fields. None are available - they charge a deposit fee which the farmers want back. Besides - many of the totes hold other than liquid fertilizer.

Basically it was used to hold liquid fertilizer. I don’t see any problem using it for garden water.

I don't think that it's just people in your area. There's something about an auction which can bring out the competitiveness in people... sometimes with expensive results.

I gave up going to auctions. I saw a pallet about 400 T-posts go for considerably more than brand new when purchased individually. I'm sure you can get a discount on 400. Then there's another 10% auction fee. I save money by buying new and I can get in, buy what I want in the quantity I want, and get home with time left in the day.
