I'm sure it will be a good machine for you. I'm curious though, how does Mahindra deal with tier 4 emissions? They still must have a fairly complicated/expensive system even without a particulate filter?

It is fairly complicated -- they use a DOC (catalyst) instead of a DPF. How that compares to DPF and which is better is pretty much marketing. I will say this, Mahindra must have done a good job marketing or their dealers are just spinning the truth, because quite a few customers are under the impression that Mahindra magically avoided the Tier 4 rules. Not the case at all.

Tractors with DPF aren't a problem to regen as you can still operate the tractor while its going through a regen (just have to raise the RPM for at most 15 min). What you should be looking at in the engine is the ECU and electronic software because that is where the big difference is. Maintenance for the software and wiring can be an issue. Look at reviews for both engine brands. I will say, I have seen complaints on some forums that Mahindra's electronic wiring wears and tears easier in some models because of placement.
Having owned both John Deere and Kubota, I love both brands and am only familiar with Mahindra through friends who own one, but as far as I can tell, for the same cost, you tend to get more quality/trade-in value out of a Kubota than a Mahindra at the same price. Also consider which dealer you can rely on to still be there in a few years or has more experience with maintenance on equipment.
