Used Kubota M7040. What do I need to know?

/ Used Kubota M7040. What do I need to know? #21
The other thing I have to think seriously about is that all of my implements are Cat 1. I can change the pins on the mower, disk, spreader, two bottom plow and rake. The box blade and my chipper have Cat 1 sized holes and would need to be drilled out or some sort of adapter pin used. Not sure how all that would work. Also would be concerned about tearing up Cat 1 ground engaging stuff with the heavier more powerful tractor.

I use Cat II to Cat I bushings frequently, my M7040SU came with a full set in the toolbox new from dealer. I pull a Cat I 3 furrow plow with it for example.

DT is Kubota speak for "Dual Traction" or front wheel assist.

H in the model should denote hydraulic shuttle, and it should have "Hydraulic shuttle" decal on hood.
The one I'm looking at is the M7040DT. The spec sheet I'm looking at says the DT is the model with 4wd and sync-shuttle transmission. The M7040HD is the 4wd with hydraulic shuttle transmission. The specs I'm looking at are not from Kubota so they may be wrong.

Guess you will have to drive it to know for sure. I wouldn't be scare of synchro one if you are good with a clutch. I have hyd shuttle and love it.

My L4400 is a DT. Fully manual. No synchro. You have to come to a complete stop to shift any gear. So a mechanical synchro will feel like a step up. So far have not heard back from the seller and since yesterday I've been down with flu symptoms (covid test neg) so not sure when I'd be able to look at it anyway.

I have had a Kubota L4400 4wd for about 18 years now. Love it. Great tractor. Has fit my needs perfectly for years. Lately I have been considering a larger tractor but not seriously. I recently got a portable sawmill and hauling large logs is taxing the L4400. Plus, my daughter and her husband have been eyeing my tractor because they need one.

Anyway, I was foolishly perusing Tractor House and up pops a2007 M7040D 4wd with 2000 hours on it about 20 minutes from my house and being sold, possibly, by one of my wife's kinfolk. She's asleep right now so I'm not able to ask her. They are asking $28,500.

Things I want are 4wd, which it has, mechanical trans, which it has and no pollution/DEF/ computer crap which it does not have. From the pictures the tires look good. Does not appear to have been abused for what that's worth. Certainly no worse than my 2005 L4400. It has a shade but no cab. I do not want a cab. It has a quick detach bucket which is nice.

So, two sides to my question:

1) What do I need to look for specifically in a Kubota M7040 with 2000 hours if I decide to go look at and drive this thing? Are there known issues with this tractor? Does that seem like a fair price? (Seems high to me).

2) What do I need to look for generally in a 15 year old tractor with 2000 hours on it? I have never bought a used tractor.

An M6040 would probably be in line with my needs and budget but I can't find one of those within 500 miles of here. Any reason going "up" to a 7040 would be problematic?

Thanks guys. Any insight into this much appreciated.
I purchased the same model in 2007 (no cab) and $28,500 is about what I paid for it then. It is the only tractor I have ever owned and although I don't use it daily (only 1200 hours in 14 years), I have worked the crap out of it. Probably shouldn't admit this, but I have used it as a bulldozer a few times. I can't comment on today's prices because everything is out of whack, but I highly recommend this model. My only regret is not getting one with a cab.

I have both a cab and open station but a larger unit. Each have their advantage and disadvantages.

A cab wouldn’t last a week for the things I do. In fact, if I were to get this tractor I’d probably take the homemade shade off. It’s is already beat up.

I went by and looked at the tractor. It is considerably more beat up than it looks in the picture. Exhaust stack is bent. Hood is bent on the front and headlights don’t fit just right. Deck step is bent. Rubber hood trim is falling apart. Seat is trashed but has a cover on it. Pretty sure this tractor spent its life outdoors. Left front tire looks new. The rest are okay.

No significant rust. No sign of leaks in the expected places. I did not look at the engine. I will if I get more serious about things.

I drove it around the parking lot. Sounds and feels fine. Loader, bucket and hydraulics seem fine. I did not run through the gears or engage 4wd. Was easier to drive than I expected in terms of tight turns. Some of my in-law’s older and larger farm tractors seem more ponderous. They probably don’t have hydraulic assist steering. The size was not too intimidating but there are definitely places and trails on my property where it will not go and the L4400 will.

My impression is that it is a solid machine but a bit ugly. I don’t think there is any doubt it is overpriced given the external condition.

If I really and truly needed this size tractor and it was closer to $20k I would seriously consider it. As is, I will pass.

It is owned by my wife’s distant cousin. He commented that other folks were looking at the tractor as if to say it might go soon and there was no need for him to come off the price.

Question: Are the M5040 and M6040 the same size with different engines?

It’s my belief that the 50, 60 and 70 are on the same frame and loader.

The 50 has normal aspirated engine while the others have turbo’s. Maybe the 60 is normal aspirated engine too. Others on this site can shed more light on that.

Same as motorcycles, tractors do not seem so big once you spend a couple weeks in the saddle.

When I was looking for a used cab tractor, the Kubota 7040 was at the top of my list. One of the things that I didn't like about it was that it only had an 8 speed transmission. I went back and forth on that, and in the end, decided that I wanted a tractor with a 12 speed transmission.
