Used Lawn/Garden Tractor Recommendation

R,

Sure is nice seeing someone asking about aquiring a used machine every once in a while. I'm glad to know that I am not the only one looking for deals!

Anyway, regarding your questions, there are several tractors that may fit your/their needs as long as your neighbors are the "fixer upper" types. In other words able to do some of the maintenance.

The tractors that I have done the most research on are the older jd models. Here is a good site for them. Link

As for the bucket for one of these, the Jonny Bucket is the best/only one that I have found that is a new product.

The JD 140 model is an very sought after tractor due to it's rugged nature and is a very heavy duty model that has the ability to accept 3ph and some even come with hydraulics on the front and rear. Check the first link and look at the models info for more details.

I currently have a JD165 that I picked up for 100 bucks and use regularly pulling heavy cart loads and other chores. I would like to get a lift for my tractor, but it wouldn't half as heavy duty as the one for the 140 series.

HTH,

Chad

The $1000 figure may be low, but only by $500-$1000. A JD 318 from 83 which I have can be bought now for the 1500-1800 on Ebay, if you are handy and can restore it will give many more years of service and it will accomodate an FEL. I just restored an '83-318 this past winter. Rebuilt the mower spindles/bearings etc. It came with a newer P218 Onan that had had a ring job. When I found the bad coil and replaced, I reallized I had a real winner, and went on with the full restoration. Now I feel this tractor will probably go another 20 years with good care. IMHO

I just lucked into a 70's Cub Cadet 16 hp (Kohler) with mower deck & front blade & chains that is in great shape. My wife's cousin bought it from the original owner 4 years ago. He put a new clutch into it & I'm giving him $300 for it. I don't even know the model - but will when I pick it up Saturday. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I want it for the damp times that my TC33 is to heavy for & for my wife & daughter to use...

Shade - post the model and a pic if you can when you pick up the Cub Cadet. I'm "cursed" with looking around for a garden tractor now and I can't help comparing what I'm seeing to the old (gear) 128 I had. Most newer ones suffer pretty bad in comparision - except for the JD318 I eyed up last weekend. The old IH products were tough little buggers.

Well to get something to mow, till, and haul, that you could possibly put a loader on it later all for $1000.?Tell your friends that it probably can't be done. The best they could hope for is to try to find a riding mower and a 5 h.p. walk behind tiller that some halfway trust worthy person wants to get rid of,and maybe do a little work on them to try to fix the stuff on them thats wore out.Since I am from w.va. also,I am familiar with the gravely walk behinds,My stepdad had one for years, you can get a mower,a tiller, and other attachments for them, you MIGHT be able to get a very used one of those for that amount, but they are becoming a collectors item I think. What we want and what we can afford,I have learned the hard way,are two different things.
