Used the new hoe...

Wow, the tractor itself is less than 9 feet. So between
the FEL and the BH, you've more than doubled the length!
Puts things in perspective. So if you want room to take off
the BH and leave it in the shed, you would need more like
24 feet of space? Longer than I'd planned. Thanks for
the information.

Which leads me to the next question, have you tried to
take the BH off yet? Does it appear to be fairly easy?

Cliff,
I do have about a foot or so of space in front of the tractor when it is in the shed. You are right though there is no way I would have room for the hoe (off the tractor) and the tractor in the shed at the same time. I will check and see if I can get the doors closed (without moving the boom to one side) if I move some stuff around, I will let you know.

Anyone have a decent overall length estimate for a 4710/460/48 combo parked? I was guessing around 19-20 feet. Could be I've underestimated a tad if Bill is close to 20' with his 4115/410/46! My 'bay' is just 16' deep now - I'm trying to figure out how far I'd have to extend it to drop the hoe in the back and still have room to park a 4710/460.

Phew! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I figure I can do a bump-out of 4 or 5 feet on my 16' bay but I didn't want to go farther than that with this shed.

Now - cowboydoc or anyone - what is the end-to-end of a large frame JD/FEL/BH?

Ahhh. Big sigh of relief. Thank you for the info. So, based on
that, I'm thinking a 18 or 20' garage should be deep enough,
yes?

I gather you haven't tried taking the hoe off and putting it
back on again -- not something you'd want to do for fun, I
suppose.

Keep us up to date on your adventures with your hoe. (OK,
that's a wierd sentence out of context.)

you are pretty close depending on how you position the loader bucket. I can get the whole combination under the roof of a 20' carport but I transport it on a 16' trailer with the loader bucket curled down and the BH overhanging the rear of the trailer by a couple of feet. Actually, I could get less overhang if I moved the the tractor forward but then I would have too much tongue weight.

I wonder if I could fit the whole (well most of it anyway) TLB in the 16' bay temporarily if I swing the hoe ALL the way over to the side as far as possible and drop the bucket off of the loader?

I'm kind of in a catch-22. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif To do a proper job of extending the bay - I really need to do some serious foundation and/or cribbing prep. (This barn is on a slope, front-to-back. The bay is a pole-style extension on the main barn.) I'm also considering widening the bay from 10' to 12' while I'm at it as eventually most of the wood/siding on this shed needs replaced anyway. The job would be SO much easier if I already had the hoe. But I wanted to make sure I have an "under roof" home for the tractor before I bought it. For sure I don't want to have to drop off the hoe every night just to store the tractor in the bay! (Not sure where I'd put it anyway) But dropping the FEL bucket might not be too bad just to tuck it in at night until I get the bay rebuilt.

To make it more frustrating - I'd really like to get the tractor this year for other uses - but the bay project has to wait until next year. This year is spoken for with house remodeling!

I think you could get it all under cover. The biggest issue you might have is the height of the ROPS. They put a tall ROPS on when they sell a BH and it is about 9"+ in height so it may not fit. The tall ROPS folds but it would be a royal pain to lower it every day and if you are at all like me you would forget sooner or later. I would not worry too much about getting it all under cover anyway. I often leave the BH and loader outside like now since I have been tilling fields for planting grass and have had only a disk attached to the tractor for the last couple of weeks. I usually keep the loader and BH on the tractor but even then the seat on the BH is starting to deteriate. The seat on the BH has a really cheap plastic cover that would not last long no matter what you did to protect it. The paint on the BH is good and the cylinder rods are chrome plated so not much harm will come to it if you leave it exposed. The hoses are about the cheapest things they could find so they will not last long anyway. I have had to replace half of the hoses this year and they are less than 2 years old. I had a hydraulic shop build new hoses and they should last much longer than the cheap junk JD uses on the BH's.
