White was the buyer of several companies in the 60's and 70's. They were a large truck manufacturing firm (Do you remember White Semi Trucks?) Mini-Moline was around long before White got involved in buying up companies like Oliver, etc. I don't know how White and MM are related but I don't think MM put White together. I do know that Oliver tractors changed their name from Oliver to White-Oliver after Oliver was purchased by White Industries and then several years later they dropped the Oliver part of the name and it just became White.
White trucks became White-GMC, then Volvo-White, now the White name is gone and they are just Volvo's.

Who owns the Freightliner name now? Weren't they part of (all of?) White at one time?

Freightliner is owned by Daimler-Chrysler, as is Sterling, the former Ford heavy truck line sold to Freightliner in order for Ford to increase F-series production by converting the Louisville heavy truck plant for the SuperDuty production. I had forgotten about the White and Freightliner connection.

I live (now) about 10 miles from the Ford "Chaimberlin Lane Plant". The farm I sold last year was less than 1/2 mile from there. I recall the original groundbreaking. For years, the Ford "Louisville Line" heavy trucks poured out of that place. Now it's Super Duty pick ups and cab-and-chassis units.

Sure didn't know Daimler-Chrysler owned Freightliner too. We've got a number of Sterling trucks here at work. (Mostly tri-axle dump trucks) With all these mergers, buy outs, and closings of the last decade, you need a program to tell who's who now.

In 1960, the White Motor Company entered the agriculture market with the purchase of the Oliver Farm Equipment Company. In 1962, White acquired the Cockshutt Farm Equipment Company of Canada. White increased its agricultural interests in 1963 with the acquisition of Minneapolis-Moline.

In 1969, Oliver, Minneaplois-Moline and Cockshutt were merged to form White Farm Equipment with headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois; White Motor Corporation's headquarters remained in Cleveland, Ohio. Six years later, Oliver, Minneaplois-Moline and Cockshutt were folded into the White brand. The green of Oliver, red of Cockshutt and yellow of Minneapolis-Moline tractors was replaced by the silver tractors of White's "Field Boss" line.

My greatest fear is that before my time on earth is up, mergers and buyouts will lead to super corporations, i.e., only a handful of manufacturers in each market segment will exist. I am a bit concerned that GM and Ford will be gobbled up by companies such as Toyota, and brands will exist only by name, much like the electronics market today. RCA and Zenith, for example, were purchased by Asian companies for brand recognition, solely for those companies to penetrate the N.A. markets where brand identification is still relatively strong. CNH is another example, Fiat now sells many more tractors and equipment with the NH and Case names than they ever could with the Fiat name. These consolidations will likely drive prices up further, as there will be less competition in the market.

Another merger/buy out/relationship that I'm keeping a close eye on is Caterpillar and ther association with AGCO. Cat now owns Perkins Diesel. Massey Ferguson, a division of AGCO, was the former owner of Perkins. AGCO took on the Challenger tractor line from CAT. This is far from over. Watch for CAT to come away even stronger. Those guys know how to run a business.

Agco has an agreement to market the SAME tractors for now. SAME is still part of the SAME Deutz-Fahr Group.
