Used two bottom plows upstate NY

Some very important info here. Glad I caught it before I bought it. Could some one possibly post some pictures of the dearborn 2 piece and 3 piece plows. I have been looking for a small 2 bottom 12" or 14" but want to know more about what I am looking for. Thanks

Here is a 3 piece setup on a Dearborn 2 bottom plow. The 2 piece does not have the wear shin on the front leading edge. Ken Sweet

As I think Ken is pointing out..... You can replace the shin and the shares (ken shows the share as a "point"). But, you don't want to replace a moldboard ($$)...and I don't believe the 2 piece (share and moldboard only) style are any longer available to purchase.

The plow shares are the highest wear part....and are basically throw-away...with replacements readily available. However, the way most of us "compact owners" operate a plow.....I would bet we'd never wear out a plow with good parts.

When buying a plow look at the shin thickness and the moldboard thickness. High wear can be readily apparent with thinning moldboard / shin sections. Then too you will see some which are cracked and welded.

Look for bottoms that sit even on a flat surface. Look for "sprung" parts. These small plows are pretty stout....but some may have hooked big rocks with high HP tractors. Coulter bearings and any rolling landslide should turn smoothly.

A few years ago, I rebuilt a Massey Ferguson #66 2X14" 3-point plow. Just about every wear part was tossed and replaced. Even dealt with a slight bit of wear on one frog. This is a plow with what's being described as the "3-piece" bottom. (There's a bunch more'n 3!)

While I was doing the re-hab, I took a few pictures, and did a bit of a narrative of the project. It grew to quite a thread. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/92737-plowing-new-ground.html (Go to post #59 in that thread for a detailed set of pictures that show a "shin", a "share", and a "moldboard". )

Before the economy tanked, before iron prices went through the proverbial roof, and when there was still a bit of inventory still on shelves, I spent far more on parts than a GOOD plow was selling for then. I can only imagine what the cost would be now.

A bit of advice; If you ever go so drastic with re-habbing a plow, and you plan to USE it frequently, get EXTRA parts while you can find them. (ie shares, shins, maybe even coverboards, moldboards and landslides)

About the 2-piece bottoms; You CAN find parts, but the sources are scarce (at best) and the prices are downright unreasonable (relative to the cost of the 3-piece version)
