Used ZTRs

Yea you would have to get with the Dallas area lawn care services and then you would be taking your chances on them machines....the ones I've seen look awfully rough.

Keep looking you may get lucky.

Check the dealers. This time of year they have "left overs" and end of model year units for good prices. I just picked up a JD 757 that had some demo hrs on (8) it for 40% off retail. Just remind the dealer that he will pay interest and have storage all winter at this point.

Around here, my local JD dealer would sell that demo for about $40 off of retail. His demos usually have closer to 50 hours and he still wants $8k+.

None of the dealers I have visited (I have only been to 2) had any used units, except one had the Encore that looked like heck for $6000 and might trade for a Land pride which he would sell for $2995 but it has 1300 hours. I guess I should visit several dealers which is kinda hard because most of them close at noon to 2:00 on Saturday and some aren't even open on Saturday. I have to work for a living although I can sneak out from time to time but there aren't many dealers very close to my office.

I have researched ZTRs all over the net (including here) and this is what I have concluded.

1) I really don't want to spend more than $5000 to $6000.

2) For that money there really isn't a new unit that I think is worth that - Hustler Fastrak etc.

3) For $3000 you can get box store mowers but not even close to the quality.

4) I really want a full commercial grade, but they are $7000 and up for the configuration I feel I need.

5) I hear "get a second hand commercial" all the time.

Problem is, WHERE? I have looked on ebay, craiglist, the newspaper, dealers, etc and have found very few prospects and what few I have found seem way overpriced or too many hours.

Example Landpride (Hustler) 3 year old mower with 52" deck and 23HP air cooled Kaw supposedly in good condition $2995, but it has 1300 hours on it. The dealer who is trading for it said these engine lives are typically 1500 - 2500 hours, plus the hydros and everything else might be near worn out also (I put that in). He said overhauls are expensive and they typically replace engines if they are worn out. This engine is about $2000 installed!

Another example Encore (never heard of it) with 26HP Kaw 61", looks like heck, two flat tires on front, used as a loaner by dealer, has 500 hours = $6000!!! He says it was close to $10K new, but does that mean MSRP, if really sold new for say $8500 then not enough depreciation there for me considering how USED it looks.

I bought a used Lesco 52" mower with a 25hp Kohler Command V-twin on it. The mower had 476 hours on it. I've put about 25 hours on it since I bought it and so far it has done very well. My mower is about a 1997 model and looks like the older Grasshopper mowers. The deck is out in front of the rest of the mower and it has two wheels at the front of the deck and two wheels at the back of the tractor portion of the mower. The dirve wheels are at the front of the tractor portion. The price: Under $1300.00 inlcuding taxes and transport home. Here is a link to the auction I bought it at:

TedEverett Home Page

These auctions take place on the first Friday of every other month. The next one is on Dec. 7. At the auctions I've attended (3 so far) there have been a variety of commercial units sold. Some were almost new and others were pretty tired. Just about any brand has been sold there from the more common ones to some that might be termed "exotic". Some of the best deals I have seen there were a pair of Toro 72" mowers that had less than 100 hours on them. Both of them sold for less than 5000.00. That seemed like a good deal to me. I've also seen a lot of Dixie Choppers there. Some were worn pretty badly, but others were almost new. I've also seen a lot of JD equipment go across the block and much of it was low hours. Also quite a few Kubotas last time around in October.

I wonder if there are regular, similar auctions here in Texas? Would seem to be a good place to look.

See if you have a local LESCO dealer in your area. They often have trade in units that they can recondition for a lot less than $6000. I've seen sone of their new models selling for less than that last summer. If they have any leftover models, now would be the time to get a great deal.

They were recently bought out by John Deere.

Try Catching Tractor on Hwy 82 in Sherman. They both sell & auction used equipment, including ZTRs:

Catching Tractor | Lawn & Recreational

Some dealers in the area that take used ZTR equipment in on trade-in & resell:

Sams Lawn Riders - Sherman
Dennards - Whitesboro

I purchased a used Husqvarna IZ 5223 ZTR from Dennards a few years ago with only 40 hrs on it for around $5K. Just traded it in with 176 hrs on it for a Gravely XDZ 260 M. They may still have the Husky available.

According to Lesco's website there is a dealer in Frisco and one in Plano. I will try to take a look at them.

I'll check out Dennards, I forgot they sold mowers. I live less than 20 miles from them. Also, I'm familiar with Catching for farm equipment - didn't know they do mowers.
