Using a midmount mower as a brush cutter- how bad

Wow, glad i read this post, i was just going to go out and cut a field of brambles with my wheelhorse...maybe not....

I had briars encroaching on a tree line at the edge of the lawn. I figured I could take smaller bites at least.
Anyway, the briars tangled between the pulley and the mower deck, popped the belt off and really jammed up the pulley.

Even after untangling everything and replacing the belt, I could never get belts to stay on the pulleys for any length of time. I guess I could have replaced the pulleys, but figured I'd need something with more power and robustness.

That Wheel Horse was pretty old when I bought it anyway...

So, I got a Deere 670 with a rear finishing mower. Never even tried the RFM on those briars...I cut them down with a weed whacker with a saw type blade. That made fairly short work of them.

About a year after I got the 670, I got a rotary cutter for field acreage I owned. Now, briars never even slowed that thing down!

Save some monew and get a 450$ howse or KK 4' hog for that little bit of cutting..
