using box blade rippers to break up ice on driveway

/ using box blade rippers to break up ice on driveway #21
I like to keep a thin layer of snow pack on my driveway to help with not blowing my gravel onto the lawn with the snowblower. Once every few years this snow pack ends up turning into sheer ice. What I found works well is an implement I made. I welded two diamond harrow tooth harrows together. It's about 6 feet wide. Mostly I use this to loosen up the gravel in my driveway and to level it. I've found in winter it works really well to shave the ice. If I shave in reverse the teeth don't dig in very deep but it's just enough to make the ice surface rough again. If i drive fast enough the savings spray all over and when they freeze onto the ice the slippery is all gone. Most times one "treatment" is enough.

I have used my York rake to scar up ice and snow pac, sometimes have to throw a few front end weights on it.

I have used my York rake to scar up ice and snow pac, sometimes have to throw a few front end weights on it.

I also have a rake that fits my ATV, similar to the York rake. I made a scarifier to use in front of the rake when necessary, mainly to break up gravel before raking. The scarifier will scratch the ice but I haven't had any luck using it to break up the ice.

I don't have a picture of the rake/scarifier combination but here is the system I made with the S-tines mounted. It is simple to remove the S-tines and put on the rake and scarifier.
