Hi, new here. Has anyone tried using a 3-pt hitch fertilizer spreader for spreading sand on a driveway? I'm thinking it would clog and not flow out the bottom properly, wondering if anyone has tried the same thing. We have a loooong driveway and spreading by shovel is getting old!
Thanks.

Sand is too fine, and it will clog as you are thinking. A possible alternative if you can get it, would be what we call shot gravel. It is about the same size as granular fertilizer. Even at that, it would have to be very dry to flow well.

I had a neighbor who spread sand with a three point fertilizer spreader. He kept the sand under a shed and always made sure it was bone dry. I personally have never tried it. He also had an attachment that attached to the top of his existing auger in the mixer bowl. If memory serves the extension was somewhat concentric with two half inverted v type fans affixed to the shaft. He also advised the sand was very abrasive on painted surfaces of the tractor.

Never used a 3-point unit but use a walk behind a lot.

Due to density of sand/gravel the agitator needs to be considerably smaller otherwise beyond needing to be dry I don't see any reason they would not work.
I would suspect that a vibration style of agitator could prove to be best option as smaller clumps would have less tendency to clog up the works.
