Non Standard 3 Point Backhoe Pin?

It isn't just when working the hoe, either. That's a lot of weight sticking out the back and there is a lot of sideward movement when traversing. I have a 750 Woods which I use sparingly. I plan to get a subframe but it will have to be modified as they don't make one for such an old attachment.

It's not the movement of the tractor when using a 3 point backhoe, it's the side forces applied by the unit that breaks the transmission casting and I've never had an aluminum transmission casting on any tractors I own, all cast steel.

That force is applied to the top link mount more than anywhere else and that is what fails and usually takes the transmission case with it.

I know a person who did just that with a 50 horse Kubota and when he got done, the repair bill exceeded 10 grand. needless to say he sold the 3 point hoe and bought one that had a subframe mount.

3 point hitches are designed for straight line pulling, not side forces.

Good luck with it. Not in my wheelhouse anyway. If I need a trench dug, I call Black Swamp and have them deliver an excavator or call the guy down the road, He has a big Kobleco and charges little to dig.
Agreed. Guys today overuse the intent of a small and simple farm backhoe and try to make it a mini-excavator used beyond capacity. I formerly had a 3pt Woods 700 BH on a 2wd Ford 1900 and used it for years with no issues because I know the ropes.

Today, my little JD 790 TLB w/subframe digs stuff around a farm, scrapes out ditches and digs out bushes, smaller stumps, rocks and posts. I work it but know when to say when. Bigger things and you're right, commercial excavator guys are not expensive and do a way better job than I can.

Owners that 'horse' their tractors around using the backhoe to move it are playing with fire if there is no subframe. That horsing them around really imposes severe sideloading on the upper mount that if it fails, usually takes the transmission case out as well. Even with a subframe mount, that activity puts a lot of undue stress on the upper mount especially. Why I don't have one (I did long ago but sold it). Just as easy for me to rent an excavator or have the guy down the road drive his big Kobleco up and dig for me. I'd rather pay him than have one, lots less expensive than replacing failed, stressed components. I don't pull or dig stumps. I have a Landpride stump grinder which is really an Erskine in disguise minus the suitcase weight brackets which I added. I hang a pair of 100 pound Kubota suitcase weights on it to help keep it planted when I'm grinding stumps. It gobbles them up with 90+ pto horses on tap.

In the early 1980's, before I knew better, I had a teeny-tiny Ford 1900 2WD tractor that I put a Woods 700 backhoe on. We lived in Maine then and you would not believe the huge rocks I horsed out of holes with that. I twisted that boom every which way but loose. I dug stumps so big I spend all day digging and then could barely roll it out of the hole.

What I was thinking I don't know but if there is a patron saint of backhoe operators, he was with me. I used that backhoe for five or seven years that way and never any problem. I would never even have a backhoe without a subframe today, let alone use one the way I did with that little Ford 1900.

It wasn't as much stupidity as no money so I had to do what I did and is proof that every now and then a blind dog gets an acorn. As dumb as I was, however, I always left the special Woods backhoe pins in place when using a different one would have been easier.
