Using my truck and trailer to move other people's equipment

The real killer for someone interested in being legal in all respects as well as protecting himself with proper liability insurance is that it drives your costs up pretty substantially and you can't begin to compete with the scab bootleggers who JUST DO IT because they can. Got a truck, got a trailer, what the heck, haul some equipment for folks for a few bucks under the table...

Not a smart thing to do but then not everyone is smart.

Same sort of thing prevents a properly licensed, legal, insured operator from making a few bucks on the side with his tractor brush hogging or ... there are always some good ole boys out there willing to do it on the cheap who didn't waste $ on insurance and credentials. Sure, they may go out of business due to not making enough to cover contingencies like repairs but they could temporarily afford a few more 6 packs and for every one dropping by the wayside there are more to replace him.

In some areas equipment hauling is like that too.

I tried this last year with a CL ad. Got one call to haul a non running Ford. I was right in the middle so it would have been perfect. Knew it would been all day event and about 200mi round trip. I low balled him at 200.00 and he turned me down. I realized right then people will pay for a wrecker but think my time and expenses aren't worth anything. It was probably a 300-400 dollar job by all rights especially not knowing what I was getting myself into retrieving a non running tractor down in the hills. After that hauled several junk cars and that was about it. All cash jobs and owner understood if anything happened I never seen them before or was just doing them a favor.

Thanks to all who have posted so far, including the sales lead.

I definately need to do some homework, with a home and a mini-boss (daughter) I don't want to take any risks. Want to be legal and insured. Sounds like this may come down to a dollars and cents thing where it may just not make sense.

I'll do some homework.

Unfortunately JoelD; between the lawyers and the Gummint, a lot of good ideas go by the wayside because of red tape and possible litigation worries.

I think maybe this may have just saved him a small fortune in lost time and cost over runs.
