I just got off the phone with a guy that is selling a 1500D with a loader and box scraper for $6500. He said that the only thing wrong that he knows of is that it uses about a 1/4 quart of oil every 40 hours under hard use. Is this within reasonable limits? He said he has only put about 100 hrs on the tractor in the 1 1/2 years that he has owned it and the meter shows 650 hrs. He told me that he has changed the oil twice in 100 hrs. Is this normal or should he have done it more often?

I am going to go look at this tractor as it is very close to me and nobody else in my area is selling yanmars. He is a private party selling it in the paper and I think that he is a little high on his price. What do you all think?

Price is a little high. What area are you in?

I don't check my oil that closely, so I don't know how much my own machines use. Just off hand I would say that the oil consumption sounds OK if it is not blowing it out the breather. Motors do vary quite a bit from one to another in how much that they use. The oil change frequency sounds right, as does the total hours and hours per year of use. The price is a bit on the high side - which he probably knows...though it is easy to get that into one if he paid a little high, maybe put some new tires on it plus a top end loader. I'd ask him why he wants more than most. It may be that he has good reasons why it is better than others. Of course he may just be looking for a profit. You would be lucky to get that back out of it.
I think you will be able to tell real quick if you are looking at a creampuff or not. I've noticed that if a guy is going to put money into a "keeper" machine - one that he intends to have for awhile - he often starts by replacing the rice tires with something more suitable for our soil conditions.

When I look at the tractor tomorrow, where do I look to see if it is spitting oil out of the breather that you mentioned and what does it mean if it is? This will be the first Yanmar that I have looked at.
