using other people\'s equipment, mixing hyd. oil

Hello,
A little over a year ago I bought a JD 5420.
I have a great neighbor and we use each others stuff sometimes, usually no problem, bush hog, post hole digger, trailer, etc...
The other day he asked me if I would/could mow some hay. I wanted to use my tractor, not his "M". He has a NH 9' haybine. Then we got to thinking about the hyd. fluids mixing, he said he uses straight 30 weight oil in the haybine. So I just mowed with the "M"
Is there a device or method we could use in the future so this is not an issue?
Thanks

Use a universal Transmission fluid in everything ? UTF. This might be a problem on some of the older stuff though.

This should not be a problem with the haybine and I dont think you would mix enough for you 5420 too ever notice, and yes I agree the utf is the best choice.

That might work if it was all my equipment , but don't know how my neighbor would feel about me asking him t o change his fluid.

Yeah he said he was not concerned about the haybine and we thought of closing his cyclinder as much as possible so it would have a minimun amount of fluid in it.
But my JD is still under warranty and I didn't want to take any chances. So do any of you know if the UTF meets the needs of my JD. The hyd. and transmission fluid is all one unit , not separate. The book says use anti-chatter transmission-hydraulic oil. Does UTF meet this specification? Thanks

When I buy (used) attachment with hydraulics, before first use i disassembly hyd parts, wash them out with diesel fuel, assembly and use ONLY on my tractor. Btw, I'm planning to have equal oil in both of my tractors to swap attachments care free.
Maybe I'm too sensitive /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

One option would be for each of you to have your own cylinders--it would take more time to connect/disconnect, but you would be practicing "safe oil" with your tractors................

Thanks for that idea, it never occured to me to try something like that, but it may be years, or never, or first thing next spring, before I would mow hay for him again. I guess what I was hoping for was some sort of attachment/accessory to mount on my tractor that would prevent fluids from mixing and work with whatever implement I was using, and that way take the worry and hassle out of using different equipment. I guess it is pretty obvious how little I know about hydraulic systems. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A coupla cylinders and hoses are not that expensive.

I'd go that route rather than mixing oils.

You could use a self-contained pto hyd pump with it's own resivor I guess, but it will still mix oils that come to/from it, just not involve your tractor. Problem is it either ties up your pto, or at least extends it & that doesn't work well with things like mocos....

I farm with 7 tractors, 4 hyd cyliners I move, and perhaps 12-15 hyd cilinders that came with the implement - all used stuff. Just part of the territiry, not much you can do about it.

Universal trans/hyd is the way to go.

If you really wanted to, you could set up a hydraulic motor / pump coupled together w a reservoir. But you'd need some piloted check valves to direct the right line to sump for each direction and it would only be good for one circuit.

They do make rotary flow equalizer thingys to that could be adapted to work. Key is it would be messy.

Most tractors have huge hydraulic capacity, I think the 584 we use take 15 gallons or so, it takes a while to containinate.
